I Feel like you and I are pretty similar.
I have not flown a lot, but have taken a long flight from Atlanta to Tokyo and Tokyo to Manila for work. This was in 2014 when multiple planes had crashed in the South Pacific in a matter of weeks. Needless to say, I really didn't sleep for about 2 weeks before going.
I like to hear from pilots, that probably calms me the most. I also try to take cues from the flight attendants. If they don't seem worried it keeps me a little calmer.
I have a flight tomorrow from Memphis to San Antonio so nothing too major. Still not excited about it though.

If it helps, you have a much greater statistical probability of dying in a car crash than you do in a plane crash (if you are flying in the United States)
It doesn't really help because you can greatly reduce your statistical risk driving by controlling how and where you drive.
Flying = Zero control, and honestly I think this is what freaks most people out about it. We need flying cars. People would be dying left and right but we wouldn't be afraid of it.

Once, over the turbulent Aleutians, a flight attendant standing next to our aisle fell during a bump. That was daunting, but she got back up and proceeded to keep serving the pretzels or whatever it was.

The only time it really bothers me is on long flights. I have a prescription to help me relax if I need it.

if that helps you brother, by all means

I have a Xanax prescription, and it does help some, but it does not fully take the edge off.
Time to pop another pill.
I went through a phase where flying gave me anxiety. I watched videos, and started telling myself that turbulence is like a car on a bumpy road. Driving on a bumpy road doesn’t mean I’m going to crash the car; it’s just mild discomfort. That helped me not to feel like I was going to die.

You should take a hit of acid before boarding.

Fear of Flying
Anybody else here deal with it?
What are some things you do to help get over it ?
I've never really been afraid of the plane going down or anything, but I do get uncomfortable sometimes on flights. Best thing I've done is get a pair of the Bose noise cancelling head phones. For me at least, removing a ton of the cabin noise helped to settle me.
In addition, I've found that doing something tactile helps me. Last flight if I felt myself getting uncomfortable, I'd take my thumb and go from finger tip to finger tip across my hand making little circles. Just the tactile nature and repetitive feeling seemed to help.

It's not the flying that bothers me, it's the crashing.

Just talking about this the other day. Not seeing exactly where we are going drives me crazy whether a bus or definitely on a plane with the confined space...my go to is vodka and Xanax to make it bearable.

If things got dicey mid flight, I would look at the flight attendants and see what their reactions were to the "event." If they aren't showing signs of concern, you are good.

Right...for me it's more motion sickness from not being in control of the vehicle. Same reason I hate being a passenger in a car.

I always remind myself that the pilot and flight attendants don't want to die either.

I was never afraid to fly. I hated the closed in space.
Here are some options:
1. Fly first class. Feels normal, more space, and cocktails before takeoff.
2. Xanax or Klonopin.
3. Ice cold water in a bottle. Put on eyes or back of neck. Helps slow you down.

Did they ever show signs of concern?
If the answer is yes, I'm guessing you made it though the event and so maybe that's not such a useful indicator after all.

Yeah me. 9/11 did it for me
The terrorists won

Smoke a blunt or two and you’ll go straight to sleep when you get on the plane

I never thought I would be afraid until I flew for the first time. Now having said that, the source of the fear was really sitting at the terminal waiting to board.
Once I actually got on the plane, any fear I had evaporated.
