I've been following this case for a while. There are websites and message boards devoted to finding him, but so far, nothing. He's a twisted SOB, even among serial killers.

His attacks were seemingly indiscriminate. Women home alone, women with children and couples were targeted. His victims ranged in age from 13 to 41.
From 1976 to 1986, the serial killer with three monikers – East Area Rapist, Original Night Stalker and Golden State Killer – is suspected of killing 12 people, raping 45 and burglarizing more than 120 homes throughout California. Four of the victims attributed to his prolific crime spree lived in Orange County. The brutality of the crimes shocked communities across the state, spurring lock and gun sales, and causing burglaries to drop as residents were increasingly on the lookout.
This week, in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of his first crime, the FBI ignited a national quest to find the killer and rapist, offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
“We wanted to put this out, tickle the memories of individuals and see if they recall anything,” FBI spokeswoman Gina Swankie said. “We don’t want someone to feel they’re giving us erroneous information if they say … they had a neighbor who fit the profile. We can still research that individual. There’s a known DNA sample, so it’s easy to exonerate people.”

Is there a movie or tv show or something where someone calls themselves the Night Stalker not realizing it's the name of a famed serial killer? I'm drawing a blank.

They couldn't solve a case that involved a muslim trying to buy body armor this year, but they are going to solve a case that's 40 years old? I believe that with an administration like this one.

There was a TV show called the Night Stalker in the seventies, which was sort of an X Files type show, with a newspaper reporter investigating the paranormal. Given the timeline, I suspect the investigators borrowed the moniker from the TV show. There was also another serial killer who called himself Night Stalker, a little bit after this guy was active.

I was little and that show scared the shite out of me, I think it had some really haunting intro music.

Didn't have a TV at home, but I would always watch it when I went to my grandmothers.

He could be dead by now right? Or if not he'd probably go unrecognized after that long

He could be, but if he' was in his twenties then, he'd be in his sixties now, so he may well be still alive. They've never had a DNA match, so he's not incarcerated anywhere. The thinking used to be that serial killers would keep going until they were caught or killed, but the BTK killer stopped for many years. He could still be out there. Maybe he slowed down as he got older and lost his drive. Or maybe he's changed his location and M/O and is still at it.

Is he the one they thought was military or police?

Yes, There was an airbase nearby. There were some gaps in his attacks that they theorized might be due to deployments, and he tied an unusual knot that isn't widely used by civilians.
Some of his countersurveillance and other methods also seemed to indicate a familiarity with police procedures. Some conspiracy theorists claim that he may have had a relative in law enforcement who was protecting him.

Richard Ramirez, who I thought this thread was about. Never knew there were two Night Stalkers. He died in jail a few years ago.

Richard Ramirez,
He also called himself the "Night Prowler" after the AC/DC song. Ramirez was one scary son of a bitch, what he did to his victims was beyond horror. I remember his reign of terror.

Richard Ramirez,
That was my first thought as well.

That's the exception. It's much more likely that he died than that he retired. But we don't know.

The house in Mission Viejo, CA where the night stalker carried out one of his heinous crimes is a two minute walk from where I work.
