Two different cases. This guy predated Ramirez.

Kolchak the Night Stalker was a great TV show. Watched it on Netflix.

I thought I read somewhere that it was multiple people committing similar crimes, but at the time they were all lumped together as one perpetrator. I'm obviously confusing this case with another one, because the opposite is true. The original crimes were in Northern California in the late 70's, then continued as murders in Southern California in the 80's. The crimes were not linked until 2001 using DNA.

East Area Rapist: 50 rapes near Sacramento & San Jose '76-'79
Night Stalker: 10 murders in Southern California from Santa Barbara to Orange County from '79 to '86.

So what each metro area needs is a badass, uncatchable criminal out there murderin' and rapin' your women and burglaries will go down.

Michele McNamara, the late wife of Patton Oswalt, was working on a book when she died earlier this year. Here is a link to an article she had written about the case.
