Your main line Mormons/LDS would never be cool with progressive ideologies. However, here are groups within the LDS that embrace them and have even ordained gay and lesbian pastors/preachers (whatever LDS call their leaders).

I met and talked to some at a work conference one time. It was at a bar in Dallas and they were in town for some religious conference. Our group was drinking and talking and ended up talking to the big group at the table next to us and we were all surprised because they were drinking and Mormon. One of the women was obviously hammered and started telling us all about their little sect (im fuzzy on the name but it was "Christ's Community" or something) within the LDS church and how awesome it was that they were so "modern and progressive". They were just "soooo accepting of everyone" and how her cousin was a "lesbian who was just ordained". My groupnof people was made up blue collar manufacturing guys just sat there dumbfounded listening to this lady ramble on about he progressive Mormon movement. It was so weird.

DNA on the gun could give a familial match if a relative is in a governmental or company database somewhere.
