I travel constantly and work from the road, so I'm an expert on "budget" travel. (It helps to have people to exchange with.)
I've done 10 days a couple different times in Manuel Antonio in my friend's sweet place (180+degree ocean view, walk to beach and town) for just the cost of food and alcohol (+ white water, rafting, zipline, surf board rentals, and national forest--all cheap), with SkyMiles.
Just got in 4 full ski days in CO for about $1000 for two (that's total--I planned well and had a companion flight)
You can do a lot for $3,000.

And no threat of Zika virus. If you are traveling with your SO and y'all plan on getting pregnant soon....you should pay attention to where this virus is popping up.
This IS actually a concern. I want to go for my wife's birthday (labor day weekend), but we also are discussing a pregnancy in the fall. I have been keeping a close eye on the development of this virus.

I want to do Alaska at some point for sure, but I don't think this is the year I'll pull the trigger on that one.

Vegas can be done for real cheap as long as you don't gamble it away. You can find cheap flights and of course the rooms can be real cheap depending on the time of year.

Yeah I'm sure in many of those areas where the virus is popping up she would likely be ok......but, will she enjoy her vacation if she is stressing over mosquitos and the virus the entire time?

That just reads weird.

Oktoberfest in Munich. I know, I know, probably Germans.
Overcrowded and consists mostly of tourists. Go to a Volksfest instead.

It's a weird way to say it, but I don't know the proper phrasing

Could just say y'all will start trying to conceive (ttc) in the fall.

My parents called yesterday and asked if I wanted to go to Vegas this summer to meet up with my sister (She lives in the Seattle area). We love my family, but were trying to do something with just the two of us instead. My parents go to Vegas about twice a year anyway, so we'll have plenty of chances to meet up with some family there.
Vegas is always fun though.

When you narrow it down let the board know there are a few like Houston and Teddy that have traveled a lot and are a wealth of knowledge.

Sao Tome and Principe but I'm a lot closer to it than you are. You can't get flights there for $3,000.

Pretty sure we made it to Seattle and back for around $2500 in 2009. That would be a good one.
We went to Disney for less than a grand after I came back from deployment in 2003. Disney was giving out park hoppers and the all American resorts were $60 a night.

Did 7 nights at Now Larimar in Punta Cana and had an absolute blast. Spent $2200 for flight and accommodations, dropped a couple hundred on excursions. Not a five star resort but it was well appointed and we didn't lack for anything.
I spent more than double that on my honeymoon at Iberostar Grand Rose Hall, and while it was a great trip and a phenomal resort, the trip to the DR was more fun and again much easier on the wallet.
Booked the deal through Bookit.com FWIW. Did the honeymoon through AllInclusiveOutlet as it was slightly better rate than CheapCaribbean for same accommodation.

Lake El Salto, Mexico. If you are into bass fishing. It was hands down the best trip of my life. Went with my father and brother along with a good family friend(unfortunately he just passed away)
We caught on average 150 bass a day ranging between 3-8 lbs. The biggest of the trip was an 11.6. My personal best was a 9.2.
You fly into Mazatlan and drive 2 hours north. They have a vehicle full of beer and other beverages waiting for you at the airport.
With that said the cartel situation has gotten significantly worse since I went. It's a damn shame too.

A month backpacking in Alaska. Airfare included, it was right around $3k.

This seems attractive to me. How does it compare to Mexico/All the other Caribbean islands?
Very similar. The resorts are beautiful and the country side is ghetto. There's a ton of history in Old San Juan - we spent a half a day there before going to the resort where we didn't leave.
No passport needed and no currency conversion. Food was good.
This was the private island at our resort.

Key West was awesome for me and the GF last summer
Any details about where you stayed? Thanks.
We stayed at the Gates Inn. $150/ night not beach front. but it had a nice pool and bar. It doesn't have the best beaches but for us it was nice enough. We were down there for 4 days 3 nights and only spent 1 day at the beach. Everywhere we ate was good. There is enough to do without having to go to the beach every day. Plenty of fishing and sights to see (old fort, naval base, some writers house who's name is escaping me). We drove from Auburn and stopped in Cocoa Beach (family) on the way down and Miami (marlins) and Tampa (rays) on the way back. We spent $2k total I think.
