Family trip in an RV opinions

14 people?? nope

I'd rather take a submersible to see the Titanic and any other vessels that are hanging around down there than put 14 in an RV and go to Orlando... But maybe I'm different.

Pro tip: drive the first leg, so you can start drinking first.

We've got rooms rented at copper creek so we've considered taking the inlaws along and letting them stay in the campground. They don't want to go to the parks anyway.

There are a few things to know about Ft Wilderness. Its very very spread out so they would need to be ambulatory or you'll need to rent a golf cart.
There isn't alot of dining options there if they don't have a car. Yes, there is boat and bus transportation but they do not run as frequent as they do from the resort and if they do want to use a ride-share there are pickup locations on the property so they need to be able to get to/from there.

In early February the weather shouldn't be too much of a factor but that can also play a part as well (walking around in the rain, etc).


I still don't see any way this could possibly save you money in the long run. A unique experience, sure but you're going to add a TON of travel time to your trip.

Make sure you look at mileage costs. Your rental will include ___ daily miles or "the first 100 free" etc. After that there will be a charge for additional mileage. Some of them may be as high as $3.50 per mile. Others may sell a block for like $300 per additional 500 miles over the first 100.

Depending on where you're coming from in La, you're looking at over 1,000 miles round trip.

An 8 person RV (big enough to fit 14), Class A, almost all of them require additional insurance coverage ($500-$900 ish) then you're looking at $250/night EASY just for the renal.

A Class B would be a cool experience too and can fit 6+ people in transit and would be comfortable for 2 people to sleep but you would need two of them.

The cost for these isn't much less than a large class A because they're so much in demand BUT gas would be cheaper, travel time would be less and it would be easier.

My buddy drive his wife, daughter and one dog down from Frisco BUT they stayed at the beach a few days heading there and afterwards and made it like a 3 week trip (and towed his car).

We met up with them one day and he said literally, every other day he was fixing or working on something while his family was in the parks.

He said the same thing...never again and that was only three people and a dog.

14 people in an RV is going to be fricking crowd. We own a 42 foot class C and four in it is a fricking crowd. 14 would be akin to a can of sardines except sardines are dead and cant bitch and moan. It will for certain be a unique experience. I would also suggest that 14 Americans would surpass the load capacity of the chasis even in a class A diesel pusher. The camper itself is usually pusing the load capacity...add water and food and drinks and 4-5 people and most motor homes exceed there rated capacities. It isn't much of an issue but adding another 1500 pounds with 10 extra people and it could be...especially with them all jockeying for one of the 5 seats available in the thing.

On a practical note the thing will guzzle fuel....about 5 MPG if it is gas and you baby it and probably 9 if its diesel and you baby it. Having 14 people on board ain't babying it so it will be worse most likely. It will also have inadequate cooling for that many people. It will be pretty warm in the camper anyway...even the best built ones are not insulated very well and the most it can have is 2 ACs unless you're talking about a VERY expensive class A and even then with 14 bodies at 98.6 degrees and the related humidity from that many people even the best RV AC system would be taxed even when plugged into good shore power....running on the onboard generator will make it worse.

And this is one piece of advice that no one would know without experiencing it...unless it has a top of the line air ride suspension, unheard of in my experience with class c motorhomes and even very nice class a's do not have top of the line air ride suspensions, no one is going to be able to ride behind the rear wheels unless they break horses for a living and enjoy it...I have seen my daughter hovering 3 feet in the air on the back bed in our motorhome on every bridge approach.
