Man, this inflation is getting out of control. Just kidding, user error on the customer's part but wait 'til you see the owner's response.
Store owner's response:

A family goes out for ice cream and says they ended up with a $500 tip on their debit card bill. And the store owner admits they're not the only ones.
"I was pretty livid. I said, no, it’s not going down like that," said Carolyn Sion.
Sion says her daughter took her and her grandson to Marble Slab on Highway 6 in Sugar Land, paying the bill with a debit card.
"She showed me the bill, $532.50. It showed her with the tip of $509, as a tip for a total of $22 for ice cream cones," said Sion.
A $500 tip that Sion says they've had trouble getting the merchant or the bank to correct.
"My daughter needs her money back. She has bills due this week. She has to pay her rent," she said.
Store owner's response:

The Marble Slab store owner told us by phone that the credit card machine has done this to other customers. He says posted a sign on it, warning, "When tipping, no decimal or extra zeros after. Tips are non-refundable."
The owner says he cannot reverse the charges, and that customers must contact their banks to correct them.

Sounds like a fraudulent charge. He most definitely can back out the charges.

Pretty easy decision to not tip at your establishment anymore.

Owner may need to worry about these...

bullshite Also, is the claim that the customer put in a $5.09 tip on $23.50 ticket? On what planet would that happen?

I would just avoid their establishment altogether

Oh man, this almost happened to me overseas. The machine displayed the amount with the decimal (well, comma b/c overseas), and I had to type in the amount with a tip added in. I added in the extra zeros to match the decimal amount being displayed, but I noticed when typing it in that it wasn't putting in a decimal. It would have been really, really bad.
But, this is also another reason to have a credit card in these situations. I've tipped well at a restaurant before and my CC company reached out to me to confirm the tip amount because it falls outside their "normal" range.
Oh, and that store owner is an a-hole. He can fix this.

I have a credit card with a 500 limit that I use instead of my debit card now for this exact shite. I just pay it off every month sometimes 2-3 times a month.

Especially when you can't pay rent without that 500 dollars in your account. Don't tip ice cream vendors ~22%

Sounds like one of those kiosk machines where the customer keys in the tip and signs on screen. User error.

Why do people tip for someone who makes an ice cream cone?
frick that business. They know it's faulty and keep it in place.

The owner is saying he can’t refund the overage? Yeah he’s full of shite. He just doesn’t want to.

I do. Usually because it’s a bunch of kids/teens working behind the counter and I’ve seen some Karens lose their collective shite on a kid for giving Jaylyn the chocolate dipped cone instead of the sprinkle one.
As for OP, he could absolutely reverse the tip. And some banks will come after him to recoup that. So good luck, ice cream baw.

Suburban ice cream store was my first job, and you're right, some of those moms were pretty rude and bitchy.

So you view tipping as some sort of charity?
