Are you in Alabama? My wife's family does this and I'd never heard of it until I met her.

Yes - I thought everyone did it until a thread on here a while back, and Louisianans said they didn't have it over there.

I go by my older brother's burial site pretty often. He died 4 years ago this week. I don't stay very long most of the time but I still ride by there at least once a week.

He's buried next to my Dad that passed away 6 months before he did.

Condolences my friend!

I make the trip from time to time to the little country church where my Mom is buried. Have always gone by there however as most all of her family is buried there and another nearby country church.

At the church my Mom is buried at, my maternal grandparents are buried...the only grandparents I had growing up. Then that grandmother's parents...most all her family... really I have about 10 generations there probably. The church goes WAY back.

Most times when I go to see my Mom's grave, I take my elderly father with me, they were married 54 years and my 10 year old daughter who my Mom raised with me and my Dad for her first 7 years...she usually ties a note to a balloon and sends it to her Grammy. So let's just say I have shed a few tears there.

Pretty much the only time is when we bury someone else next to them

I am big into genealogy and visit family graves fairly often.

Last year I put my gas powered pressure washer in the bed of my truck, hooked up a 1,000 gallon water wagon behind it, and cleaned family headstones at six different plots in three different cemeteries.

Some people asked me why I did that. I told them that I do not know how much time I have left and want the place looking nice when I move in.

I appreciate the comfort people find in visiting a loved one's gravesite. One of my brothers lost his eldest son at the age of 23 (17 years ago). His family visits the grave every year on the anniversary of his death.

I told my folks that I would visit them while they were alive but that I would only visit their grave on the date of their burial. They both decided on cremation.

I have decided to give my body to Georgetown University Medical Center. I'll be a cadaver (I want to be named "Abra-cadaver") then they can cremate my remains. I do not plan on taking up any space after I'm gone.

ETA: As Al Czervik said in "Caddyshack", "Country clubs and cemeteries are the biggest wasters of prime real estate!".

The jury may still be out on cemeteries, but I have to believe he was wrong about Bushwood and its golf course.

I had never even heard of it. My MIL and all of her sisters dress up and put all of these elaborate flower arrangements and what not on their parent's graves. It's definitely not a thing in South Louisiana.

My wife wants to be cremated. I don't have a particular preference I suppose

I received a message that there'll be layoffs at my company as I started reading this thread. Now I'm depressed.

I make sure my son's grave always has flowers on it but I don't spend a lot of time there. Hard to do even after all these years. The week after we buried him I drove out there, laid on the ground next to his grave and just sobbed all night long.

That is heartbreaking and I am so very sorry for your loss. It's been almost 17 years since my brother's family lost a child. That family (and the rest of our family) will never be the same. There is always a hole in the heart from the loss. Time heals that hole a bit, but it will always be there. I hope that you can remember the wonderful times you had and get some comfort from that.

My dad died in 2010. I’ve been to his grave in BR probably a half a dozen times since. I think about him everyday but going to cemetery just gets me down. I’m sure I’ll visit again but he isn’t there anyway.

People grieve differently for sure. I very very seldom visit my family’s graves. Honestly, I believe fee people do. However, I do sometimes feel guilty because of it. That’s the primary reason I will be cremated. I don’t want to pass that guilt to my kids.

Just recently I was in New Orleans and visited my 7th times Great Grandfathers grave. He was the guy named Henri Ettienne Plauchier who came over from Southern France and changed the spelling of his last name to Plauché.

According to My family tree I’m related to a Etienne Henri Plossee from France who changed to Plauche. Same guy?

My best friend of many years passed away at age 35. I stop by his grave every year during the holidays or any other time I'm back home.

RIP EJW
