How far do you count immediate family to be in the excuse window of missing, before someone is reasonable to be pissed for missing said wedding?
Grand parents?
Aunt/Uncle/1st Cousin?
Godchild?
Any further?
First you need to learn what IMMEDIATE FAMILY means.

I'm talking about any player/cheer/band or the listed family members involved in the attendance of a game.

I can guarantee you that if you are a varsity HS baseball player & miss a game for ANy wedding = CUT from the team or at the very least, you aren't playing any significant time the rest of the season. No self respecting varsity baseball (4A-6A most definitely) coach would allow that nonsense. Anything below = no one cares.
What I'm saying is that there are 20-30 players on a baseball team that all have to be there for a game. There are like 60-80 football players that have to be there plus 20 cheerleaders and 200 band kids for a high school football game. That greatly increases the percentage chance of a parent to a teenager having a schedule conflict for a wedding in the fall verses the spring. Plus, no one complains about missing regular season college or professional baseball games for a wedding. They play a bagillion games, so missing one is NBD.

Then please educate me as to your definition of immediate family. Because I, along with many involved in this wedding + football game, have their own opinions.
I'm looking to the OT for their opinion too.

Well that's a pretty broad range of people.
I know when I was in the band in HS and at LSU my parents and siblings certainly didn't make every game so they would have no reason to skip a wedding on my accord.

TEAM is > "me", MVP or otherwise.
A band member likely has their class grade affected by missing any performance, especially a football game because there are too many adjustments that have to be made (according to band directors).
A Friday or Saturday varsity HS football game is FAR > any wedding/good food + free alcohol.

You need to go to some better weddings.

Not really. Those kids have to miss games for legit reasons all the time. It's not the end of the world unless we're talking about the drum major.

bullshite. It takes an act of congress to get excused without forfeiting your spot in the competition show and taking a 25 point hit to your grade. I know because I did 4 years of high school band.

So did I. And 4 years at LSU. Won the Sudler trophy at both stops.
It wasn't ideal, but shite happens. If it was just a regular Friday night game we would just march a hole, no one was losing their spot.
ETA: That said, missing for your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate's wedding... not really a good excuse.

The Sudler Trophy is not a live band competition trophy. It's like the Miss Congeniality Award at a pageant.
quote:
The Sudler Trophy is awarded annually to a college or university marching band which has demonstrated the highest musical standards and innovative marching routines and ideas, and which has made important contributions to the advancement of the performance standards of college marching bands over a period of years.

I've been in some fantastic blow out wedding, solid outdoor weddings, destination weddings, & trainwreck trailer park weddings.
NO wedding is more important than my own child's or sibling's HS/college/pro football game.
All I'm looking for is where is the line for immediate vs. distant family in order to justify an excuse for missing another family member's or friend's wedding.

Wherever you want to draw it. That's not going to be a universal answer.

One of my fraternity brothers from my home town outside did this when WVU was playing that day in DC
His wife was a Penn State alumni and they had big game that day as well. Everyone was on their phones every chance they had to watch
Their wedding venue was legit at one of the hardest places to book in northern Virginia

I don’t think he is talking about his own family. If he raised them right this would never be an issue

20th cousin, 10 times removed.
F*ck a$$holes who schedule weddings during football season. They do this because non-a$$holes don't and they get good deals on prime reception halls and caterers.

I’ve missed several of my son’s baseball games due to work so if it was a close family member I’d go to the wedding, even over a game. I absolutely love watching football, very seldom miss a Saints game, but my family members actually mean more to me and I’m not a depressed psycho that would miss something important over a bunch of young men tackling each other.
As far as my own kids, I’d hate to miss it but I can find someone to record them while I’m gone. I get it they are only young once but damn, they may grow up quick (I’ve got a 20 y/o also) but not that damn quick.

If you can miss your own kid's varsity game then he either sucks or you do or both.

Well that's really far down the line. Ha
