Only thing I can think of is that he's trying to jump from roof to roof. You can see the one he's one sort of bends back as he jumps, so he's much shorter on the jump than he planned on I think. So I think he was trying to jump to the other roof/on top of the other cart and ends up going through the plastic windshield instead.
That's the only rational explanation, outside of him just trying to destroy the windshield and wreck his back on purpose.

but even if you were trying to do that, you'd have the same ending. You'd go straight through that thin plastic.
