There is a net there it's just hard to make out in the quality of the gif. He just had his beer on the ledge against the net.

Yeah this on the once in a lifetime chance but for us fishermen how many times have you casted and a bird (mostly ducks) flies into the path of your bait/lure in midair....multiple times for me. Yeah I know bad luck but still.
