His only role was to provide help with the weight off the bar and moral support while lifting.
SMRT lifters know to put the arms in when lifting - even with a spotter, but especially when lifting solo.

I realize that, but at that weight, one man hunched over him was not going to help him get that weight up or stop it from dropping.

Spotters aren't supposed to touch the bar unless the lifter is struggling to get out the hole. Even if the spotter had his hands on the bar the whole time, I doubt he could have stopped the bar from hitting the safeties.
