but isn't the parents section held against people for loans/grants??
I would think it's used to determine if the student qualifies for Pell Grants. And certain type of student loans that are income based.

I don't really understand the question. What do you mean by "held against"? They want to make sure they aren't giving a Federal Pell Grant to a kid whose parents claim them and make $500k a year.

BUT if those parents won't give the kid a dime ... and the kid is totally on his/her own ... they're not eligible for grants/low interest loans? It's not the kids fault that the parents won't help them.
eta I guess I feel for those who can't get help from parents but perhaps can't qualify for assistance because they have to include their parents finances on the FAFSA.
Does it make more sense posed that way?

I had a child early and went to school late. My wife and i are still paying on student loans. Our plan is to send her to community college first and get her through school debt free.

Then the child should not be claimed on their taxes as a dependent or on the parent's insurance.
Then, they can file based on their own inome, and not their parents'.

I'm almost 47 ... went to community college (LSUE) one year and transferred. My parents paid everything (no TOPS back then) and I had a job for the extras. I was very blessed and realize how fortunate I was to graduate with no loans.

Ok that's what I was looking for. Maybe I shouldn't claim my 18 almost 19 yo! lol Doubt I'd lose much in the way of taxes. We get hammered yearly.

Well, almost everyone can get the student loans (Sallie Mae). They don't have to include the parents' income, but there are steps to take to alleviate this requirement. Primarily, the parents can't be providing for the kid and claiming dependency.

Dude it's done. Just curious.

You'd better make sure you can still insure someone who is not a dependent. Unless your kid is providing their own health insurance.

No clue. The whole process is like Chinese arithmetic to me

Unfortunately my parents couldn't help. I was not the greatest with money then and although i got a pell grant, i still took out student loans. My wife amassed hers due to vet school. It is a hard lesson to learn, but we are paying them back. Hopefully my children won't have to deal with student loans. All 3 of them have 529 accounts so that should help some.

Oh I totally get that some can't. My parents were super savers and I'll always be grateful.
We have 529 as well ... Oldest didn't require much with his scholarships and work so that helped. On to child number 2 now.

Congrats to the child with a scholarship. Thankfully our little ones are 5 & 2, so we have some time to build savings for them.

#2 has a partial to ull (chose it over Lsu as he can live at home ... It's living expenses that are crazy). The fact that mom will still be cooking and do his laundry didn't hurt. Told him he can transfer or stay at ull but he's not living here all of college. Gotta get a taste of the real world.
And honestly, some days I'd love for mine to be little again!!

I know that But is there a scholarship if mom makes less than "x" amount? I get needing the total but why the breakdown??
Yes. It has to do with whether your parents are divorced and whether you live with one or the other or both.

My parents paid for my undergrad so they always filled the fafsa out. When I started law school and had to take out loans I had to fill it out myself and I dreaded it every year. For loan purposes it was letting them now how big your need was and how much you could take out every year.
