Why does it matter how much money your parents make at all if they are not paying for your college? My parents didn't submit one cent for my college education.

What I found funny is that FAFSA uses a different definition of independent than the rest of us or even the IRS. It doesn't matter if you are paying most or even all of your expenses. If you are below a certain age (24 iirc) or haven't served in the military then you are still considered dependent. I thought it was strange.

Then the child should not be claimed on their taxes as a dependent or on the parent's insurance.

The thing is that according to FAFSA, at least when I did it years ago, that isn't what determines dependency in their eyes.

That sounds right. It was the 90s when I filled them out, but I recall them wanting your parents to participate no matter what.

I did have a buddy in school that was like 27 though, and his parents had nothing to so with his FAFSA filing.

What I find most infuriating is when a parent or step parent claims a child as a dependent for years then contributes nothing to a child's collegiate expenses & having it affect needs based scholarship(s) earned by the child.
This happened to my wife & severely limited her options, altering her collegiate plans in an almost overnight timeframe.
