Article - Washington Post

quote:

With each like and comment, Facebook is “exploiting” human psychology on purpose to keep users hooked on a “social-validation feedback loop,” Parker said, adding that it is “exactly the kind of thing that a hacker like myself would come up with.”

quote:

“I don't know if I really understood the consequences of what I was saying ... it literally changes your relationship with society, with each other. ... It probably interferes with productivity in weird ways,” Parker said.

quote:

When helping Facebook get off the ground in 2004, Parker said, he and others involved in the nascent social network thought: “How do we consume as much of your time and conscious attention as possible?” “And that means that we need to sort of give you a little dopamine hit every once in a while, because someone liked or commented on a photo or a post or whatever. And that's going to get you to contribute more content, and that's going to get you ... more likes and comments.”

It really will be the downfall of society

Racial tensions are 100x larger than they were 15 years ago. For some reason, it's extremely weird to NOT talk politics or show a leaning affiliation.

I'm not trying to get on a high horse here, but not having FB anymore (along with never having Twitter or Instagram) has made me a much happier person in general.

It's creating a new type of human being. And not in a positive way. Facebook reinforces all of the negative aspects of the human personality and very little of the positive aspects. It's also turning this younger generation into social retards.

Facebook is awful. I’m not anti social media, but Facebook is just too much.

I miss old school myspace, when you could 100% customize your page, the band pages were great for getting good free promotion and it was less big brotherish with a lot less rules.

Sean Parker deserves a Nobel Prize for Napster.

Yes, it was theft, but damn it shook up the world and thanks to him we have things like Spotify, which is a godsend.

Also, apparently he does cancer research now, which is badass.

Facebook is the DEBIL.

I think the current crop of people in their teens, 20s, and 30s will regret being so open to posting on social media.

I can see today's babies not being so open to posting so freely as they get older.

All I use is instagram and the first time I see someone I follow trying to push a political agenda or ranting about something ridiculous on a caption, they are permanently unfollowed.

I like to scroll through pics of hot chicks and my favorite athletes while I'm on the shitter though

Think about the transparency they have given themselves into.

How on Earth are kids these days going to run for office or become public figures? Everyone does/says something completely awful as a teenager, but this generation will have it never disappear.

That's right, and even if you delete your profile, somebody somewhere will still have a record of it.

I believe it, but actually think Instagram is pretty cool. I wish it would have come before fb. Far less grandstanding and you can get your point across with a photo (example: I'm at the beach)

I never get on fb even though I have an account because it's nothing but opinions, mostly from people that don't seem to have much to say when you actually speak to them

You are doing it right. I do the same and get a lot of enjoyment from it, wish I had gotten it sooner
