I'm selling a car on Facebook Marketplace. Some guy just messaged me asking me to call him saying he has already been approved for a loan and just needed the VIN to give them. He hasn't even looked at the car or asked any questions about it, so it seems fishy. Further, I'm only asking $4000 for it. I mean I guess a bank would issue a loan for $4000 on a 13 year old car, but something doesn't seem right.

What's the potential scam here? I messaged him back and said I would prefer to deal in cash.

Deal in cash only. That’s what I did when I sold my truck on there. Safer that way.

Could be legit. Finance company may need VIN just to see if they will even finance it.

It’s not like you can’t just walk up to vehicles in the parking lot and take a picture of a VIN

Just stop asking questions and sell me the damn car, okay? I don’t need our business being put out in public like this.

Potential scam is wanting to pay with cashier check.

Just a spitball on my part

VIN is not much info, i would ask fir it before buying (carfax), but if it starts going much further then start questioning, also look at their profile (does it have 1-2 pictures and multiple listings?).

True. Just seems weird he's ready to buy it without looking at it. I did put a lot of pictures in the ad and listed out all its benefits and known issues.

His page seems legit.

I take that back. His entire Facebook page is political memes, and his friends are scattered all over the world. No local connection that I can see, and none of his friends share a last name with him.

Many people take out loans to finance cars that cheap.

And yes, the bank has to have the VIN, mileage, make, model, color and proof of insurance.

I know that. Just seemed fishy to me he is ready to move forward with buying it without looking at the car or asking anything about it, and he seems eager to get it done today. My ad is pretty detailed and descriptive though.

My gut is just telling me something is up with this and wondering if anyone knew a scam that works this way. Like he gets the VIN, says he has cashier's check from the bank, then does the "I'll mail the check, and have someone come pick up the vehicle because I'm busy" that is common on Craigslist.

Just tell him to come by and look at the VIN. He has to be local anyway or else it's definitely a scam. You don't just buy a car sight unseen unless it's from a dealer that's reputable.

He responded and said cash was fine with him. He says he lives about an hour away. Don't think it's a scam. I sent him the VIN. We'll see what happens.

Is there harm in sending a VIN? I honestly don't know. This situation is likely a scam, but I don't see the issue with giving a Scammer the VIN?

Not a bit. I sent it to him. I just didn't want him to come back saying he had a cashier's check he was ready to send me, and he was sending someone to pick up the car for him once I received the cashier's check.

But I think I was just being too cautious and paranoid. He said cash was fine and he could make the trip to town to meet and get it.

He might be asking for the VIN to be sure he's not getting scammed or sold a stolen car.

Or he's just a decent scammer. I've had them tell me one thing was fine, then later say some BS like their bank was only allowing them to get half in cash or something.

But yeah from just the info you gave, I don't think you can say either way.

Man im about to list a jeep on there, but have held off due to not wanting to deal with these people. What are scams I should be aware of?

Yeah, definitely not going to let my guard down. It's full cash, and we meet somewhere locally to complete the deal, or we don't do it. I've had 5 other people message me about it already, so it won't be a problem to sell, but if he can deliver cash for it this weekend, it's his.
