I'm going to setup a burner account and talk about German bordello robot sex.

ETA I don’t mean that like “you’re posting something stupid”. I mean that having an Amazon Echo in my house made me finally realize something is always listening. I now realize that this extends to my phone. It’s creepy, but inevitable. I can only hope other people are deflecting the attention by having more interesting conversations.
Actually having cats, and not getting ads from Facebook for cats, hurts.
It hurts bad.

Aww. You clearly don’t have enough conversations about your cats.

Well that's all the proof I need. Case closed.
ETA: some of you actually think this is real?

I don't think that this specific example is necessarily legit, but if you think that your own technology, including the microphone on your phone, isn't being used to gather data about you then you are naive as hell.

I don't do FB anymore. It stopped being cool when people's parents grandparents got on it.
It's mostly lames now posting lame shite

It's been proven many times. This thread is actually way behind as frick. I'm pretty sure one of these companies has admitted to it or spilled the beans on another before can't remember. I'll see if there's a link.

My dentist told me I needed a panorex X-ray done during a check up. Didn't think twice about it, certainly never googled it. That same evening I saw ads for Several thousand dollar panorex X-ray machines in browser pages, TD come to think of it.
Shits real.
Shits real.

Twitter does this is well. I’ve had them advertise things to me on 3 different occasions after people I talked to mentioned these things.

I don't know about FB, but Alexa and Siri are always listening.

I sat next to a woman I work with during a training for about 30 mins. We made small talk for a little while. During that 30 mins neither one of us took out our phones. Later in the day she popped up as the first name on people I may know. We only have 1 mutual friend..
Kind of weird Man. Does FB know our phones were within 5 ft of each other for an extended period of time?

I actually know how the hardware and software works and I can tell you it does not have access to the mic in the background without user activation. iOS does not allow this.
This is all anecdotal bullshite. Facebook gets their info in thousands of other scummy ways. This is just not one of them.

Listening (locally), not recording.

They pick up on keywords. I notice this on websites when I visit them on my phone, from time to time an ad of something I talked about will show up. You are given the option if certain sites, apps, etc can access your microphone. And they are just coded to pick up on words that are used to advertise more accurately.

Not when your phone screen is off and/or Facebook is in the background...

I just assume everything I do online or around something connected to the internet can and will eventually be a matter of public record tbh.
Posted on 10/29/17 at 9:09 pm to TbirdSpur2010
That's a good assumption honestly
Posted on 10/29/17 at 9:17 pm to StringedInstruments
Then I'm sure they've heard me say frick you facebook.
Posted on 10/29/17 at 9:19 pm to StringedInstruments
So even if you deny access to the mic, they still hear you?

I made a call to BRPD once about a "white box van." I can't even recall what the call was about now, or what the van was doing but after the call I had ads for used white vans for sale for months afterwards (this was roughly 1 year ago). I didn't even have the facebook app on my phone. Still creeped out about it.
