We have a tankless hot water heater on the outside of the house. I just got up this morning and noticed the cold water is running fine on the sinks and toilets, but the hot water has very little pressure. Maybe 1/4 normal.

Should I run it to try to get it warm?
Leave it alone and let it thaw?
Shut off water to the house?

Obviously never had this issue before. I wrapped my outside faucets but didn’t do anything with the tankless water heater. (Didn’t even think about it, shame on me I know)

Wrap the water heater itself or you mean just the piping?

Mine is gas and working just fine but it’s only 25 degrees here.

I would let your hot water run for a few.

We ran warm water all night (also an external tankless heater) and it's been fine. Pipes were wrapped by the installer so we're good there.

Not sure what the proper way for you to handle it now. Personally I'd probably just let warm water run until it's fine, but I have no idea what I'm doing.

Most have a freeze protection mode of the internals. Uses a few watts to keep things from freezing. I’d run it and flowing water should melt the blockage.

Get some of those disposable hand warmers and wrap them around the piping along with a towel. Should thaw in no time

If it’s still moving water run it. Ours froze several years ago because the the feed and outlet were uncovered and outside the house. I had to get a propane cooker for a turkey fryere under it to thaw it out (not recommended).

This seems like a terrible idea.

Even in Louisiana.

Pretty easy fix. It won’t kick on if there isn’t enough water passing through. So it’s not really a safety issue. Turn your hot water on then go outside with a hair dryer and start putting some heat on the exposed copper pipes. When you get the ice dam free wrap the pipes with something. Instead of running it inside, you can also open the relief valve that way you’ll know that it’s running again.

. They can also be installed in attic, but most of the tankless water heaters I see are on the outside wall. I left my pipes dripping and did a delay wash on washing machine and everything is doing good. Now mine is gas so I don’t know if that makes a difference. I need to find out if mine has some sort of freeze protection

I know it’s too late at this time but mine is external as well. I have the pipes to and from it wrapped. Also my father called yesterday and said that the guy on the home improvement show on WWL said to run the hot water in a thin stream at the faucet farthest from the heater. That what I did and everything was good before I left for work.

Mine has freeze protection thermostat so it won’t freeze. I thought mine froze a few years ago. It was actually “tripped” because of low flow. I turned power off to it for 10 minutes to reset it and it worked fine after. I had called a plumber to come out and when he figured out how far away I was he told me to try that.

How hot can a hot water heater heat hot water?

I went outside to double check and there are no pipes running to it at all. Just a big box on the exterior wall.

How do I reset power to it? Breaker box?

I owned a house that had one in the attic. The only reason I can think of that people would prefer to have them outside is that you need to back flush them about once a year. Seems they would have a longer life inside versus in the elements. Mine lasted 14 years. It only supplied water to the master bedroom and worked well unless it was really cold outside, then it provided warm, not hot, water.

you should have a control panel plugged in to 115 volts somewhere around the heater. Maybe inside near where the heater is mounted. If it is tripped this panel should be flashing a code number like 16 or 21 or something like that. Turn off the power or unplug and then restart. It should clear the code and start working. The link below shows some of the most common error codes.
