Gotta wonder if Buckley would be as famous as he is if not for drowning.

Just my interpretation - I think it's about finding one's own spirituality/meaning through life. The "Hallelujah" refrain symbolizes inspiration, fulfillment or contentment with life.

quote:

Well I heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
Well it goes like this: the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

I think this is Cohen describing his own journey and finding is purpose/Hallelujah through his music.

quote:

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Finding fulfillment through physical love of another

quote:

Baby I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor (you know)
I used to live alone before I knew you
And I've seen your flag on the marble arch
And love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Finding fulfillment through helping another find theirs

quote:

There was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me, do you?
But remember when I moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Finding spirtuality in love with another (not necessarily physical)

quote:

Maybe there's a God above
All I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
And it's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Finding spirituality/fulfillment in the moderate, not the extremes.

Damien Rice's cover is really good. The song fits his musical style.

A band called Cloverton did a much better Christmas version of it.

Cohen's version uses religious imagery but isn't very religious.

Whatever version they used in Shrek. That's the best version.

Rufus Wainright. My favorite version is his Irish performance.

Still doesn't really explain it. And it's a relatively recent occurrence too.

I've never noticed a Christmas correlation.

As I mentioned, it's a relatively recent occurrence, but it's popping up on Christmas play lists, etc.

Because Hallelujah = Jesus and Jesus = Christmas.

Or something.

I don't know, it's not about Christmas at all and only metaphorically religious.

Agreed, I love his version the most.

I like the song, I dont need to understand it, but it puts me in a good mood when I listen to it and that is all that matters.

Yeah, it doesn't "bother" me per se (there are plenty of other "Christmas" songs that aren't really about Christmas), I just find it odd (coupled with it happening relatively recently makes it even more odd).

The music (no lyrics) was played at the church I attend earlier this year. It's definitely spreading as of late since the music is so great. However, I can't help but sit in church and think of the original lyrics, since that's what I first associate it with. Even when the lyrics are changed to something else, I still think of the original intent which is not religious at all.

I don't think he's very famous at all now in relative terms to begin with, but in my opinion he was a top 5 all-time singing talent and had the capacity to write really good songs. He had a very high ceiling.

He's not a Kurt Cobain just died famous but I'd say he's at least famous with people that dig a bit deeper for their music than the top 40 charts. And with indie people they idolize both him and Nick Drake (whom I do like) as being godlike.

References to Bathsheba and David as well as Samson and Delilah.

A woman's beauty will draw you in and at the same time imprison you, make you weak and in the end lose everything.

quote:

Baby I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor (you know)
I used to live alone before I knew you
And I've seen your flag on the marble arch

He's been here before. He had a life before her. And she may have "won" the war, but what does a victory get you anyway? Pain.

quote:

There was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me, do you?
But remember when I moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Remember the honeymoon period? When everything is love, when you are so wrapped up in each other, when you chase each other's breath, when that love has your souls entwined.
It goes away eventually.

quote:

Maybe there's a God above
All I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
And it's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Love is a bitch.

I probably listened to this song a thousand times during my separation and divorce.

It was very powerful to me.
