Long story short, I have a 6 month old puppy who has already had a $1,000 run in with the vet, so I'm curious about getting insurance.

What kind of premiums can I expect?
Is there good coverage available? (I don't want to pay a premium just to find out whatever service or condition isn't covered.)
Any hassle with vets accepting said plans?

Thanks in advance.

She's a purebred German Shorthaired Pointer. She was a gift, but cost $800.

Obamacare says they have to cover regardless of pre-existing conditions. So I think you're golden here.

Some vets don't take some insurances, so best to check which ones yours take. Not sure about premiums, but I do know it's very affordable. My wife is a vet and she prefers Trupanion.

So far it is great for routine stuff and I have no reason to think it wouldn't be for everything. I think that it's pretty cheap although I'm getting it for free through work so I don't know for sure.

Pet insurance is between you and the insurance company. The veterinarian only bills you, you pay, then try to get reimbursed from insurance.

Wife is a Vet and they learned the pitfalls from getting in bed with insurance companies on the human side.

I just can't fathom spending such money on a dog. And I'm OT rich, too.

I have it through Nationwide. Runs about $70/mo for wellness and medical. My dog has torn CCL in both rear legs and already had one fixed to the tune of $1500+ and the insurance reimbursed me 90%. The insurance will not pay for anything pre existing or hip displacement. Your vet should have some info on this.

I sell it through my agency, and it's reasonable. I don't sell it often though. Maybe 3 policies/quarter.

Depending on your coverage, it's between $15 and $60/month.

It's not worth it. They only cover some things. You only get reimbursed a portion. What you pay a year and what you get reimbursed does not out weight the other. Let's say all you do is routine shots, heart worm, and flea meds. For a dog that big your premium is likely 40 a month. Two sets of heart guard and flea mess will run you $250, and shots another $150. You get like 45% back. So you get about $125 back on the 480 you pay nothing else outstanding.

It's great for emergency situations. If your dog rarely goes to the vet, it's not a good deal

I love my dog but when his vet bills are thousands of dollars a year it's time for this.

Just wait til Hillary makes insurance for all pets mandatory so strays can see the Vet.

You think your deductible is bad for your own health insurance now....

I can vouch for Trupanion. I have a policy for my pooch and it's pretty inexpensive. Thankfully we've never had to use it. Anyway, his vet recommended Trupanion to us when we asked about pet insurance. I did some pretty extensive research and settled on that one. There's one that's ranked ahead of Trupanion, which is ranked second the last time I checked, but there was something that I found (can't remember) and in my opinion made Trupanion better. Just a personal preference thing.

If you can afford it, get it and don't look back. My pooch's premium is about $20.00/month. The sooner/younger, the healer the premium.

Oh, I just remembered why I chose Trupanion. God forbid if something would happen it's a one time deductible per each instance. Example: (none of this ever happened to my pooch) if he were to get a hernia I would pay the deductible and then the 90/10 afterwards. If he were to get another hernia the deductible was already met for a hernia so it's only 90/10 the second go'round and for any future hernias. My pooch has a $250 deductible and it's 90/10 after that.

It's worth every penny even if you never use it. I've had two pets in the past that unfortunately ran into the thousands of dollars at the LSU vet hospital. (Not the LSU vet clinics fault. I told them I would break the bank if I have to for my dog, at that time.)

"I just can't fathom spending such money on a dog. And I'm OT rich, too."

We bought a Golden Retriever for my first daughter in 2000. The dog was sweet and we loved her. Great dog. We paid $250.00 for her. She was pure bred and registered. She had every Golden Retriever problem known. Our vet bills were huge. She died of cancer at 11. It crushed us. We got another Golden. He is now 6 and is a specimen. Great breeding and genetics. Smart, lovable and healthy. There is no comparing the two. He was a $1200.00 dog we got from friends for $700.00.

Your acquisition costs for a dog is super low considering all you will spend on the dog during his or her life.

Insurance in general is a racket and a gamble. Have a nice little savings account for emergencies and forget about pet insurance.

Think that depends on insurance company and policy.

We have Nationwide and I HIGHLY recommend it.
