Sarcasm has no place in polite society. It's essentially verbal assault.

And, a three-dot ellipsis denotes an "awkward or annoyed silence," or "are you serious?"

So, after reading that article, my immediate reaction was:

Emojis should always be used when being sarcastic.

Me- "Would you like to wait for me so I can go with you?"

Gf- "No."

Me- "Okay."

Gf-" I was kidding. Fine then enjoy your night since you don't care!"

The article isn't wrong. I married a millennial. My mother overuses ellipsis' every single day. It annoys the shite out of my wife.

It's true

Right or wrong, in professional emails and the like it is interpreted by everyone in my office as annoyance in most circumstances..

Not sure how this is a fault of younger generations instead of massive and nonsensical overuse by older generations.

Normal - "I reached out to in house counsel to get his thoughts, we shall see..."

Stupid - "Received the document. Thanks for sending..."

That's not sarcasm. That's being a bitch.

I use ellipsis all the time. I inadvertently set my 22 yo SIL on edge because of it. But in true millennial fashion she told her other sister who then told my wife who then told me that she was worried that I was mad at her.

One of my co-workers uses this. I thought she was being an arse at first, but then realized she was just old.

It's "hanging" ellipses that indicate annoyance or frustration. If you use them in the middle of a sentence, it doesn't indicate anything but a removal of words in a quoted excerpt.

For instance, if someone asks you if you can do something for them, if you respond with "Yes...", you're either showing that you're annoyed, or you're a boomer.
