Everything on police body cams is public record.

Why dont businesses ban all cameras? There is no privacy in public anymore.

They run all the time and everything is available under a public information request. They may just want to see how the officer interacts with the public.

It should be public record IMO. We as taxpayers:
1. Pay for the cameras
2. Pay for the salary of the cops
3. Are entitled to know how our money is spent
Not to mention it makes the very small percentage of douche cops think twice before doing something stupid.

What if the cops use that film against people after filming something inside private residences or businesses without permission?

Well that's the part where it's not so cool anymore once the majority of officer end up with one.
Suddenly a pretty upstanding, decent guy is caught at a pretty rough and emotional moment in his life and acts a complete donkey on a body camera and it ends up on YouTube or social media and suddenly he isn't seen quite in the same light anymore.
I have been saying, they are cool until suddenly it catches you at a bad moment in your life and then they just aren't so cool.
Think about even a man and women are in a very loud but not physical marriage fight and a neighbor calls the police, body camera shows up at your door and the guy or women is all pissed and not rationally thinking and guess what? All that is now public record

I agree. Why don't private businesses at least ban all cameras? If it's a private business they could copywrite anything filmed inside. That might help civilly.

Well they can.
That's why businesses can ask officers to not come in with a gun in their gun belt.
now asking an officer to remove his body camera is not gonna get you any legal help because that's gonna violate department policy for the officer

What happens if they show up to Mr idlewatcher's house for a welfare check or the neighbor simply reports some kind of illegal activity? You'll be fine with everything they see/hear in your home being broadcast as public record? Keep in mind your address will be caught on tape and most of your belongings will be on there as well.
Also, what about potential problems with juries? They would have potentially seen/heard evidence that the police/DA needed for the trial.
I think there are many issues that need to be addressed before just making it public record across the board.

There are lots of exceptions to the public records act. Even if a recording may be generally classified as a public record, that doesn't mean portions of it are protected from disclosure and shouldn't be redacted.

I don't mind the body cams. Many times they prove that the arrested person tells lies about how they were beaten. Both police officers in my family would like them. They have nothing to hide in the way they do their job.
I taught in a daycare that had cams so the parents could go online and check up and see what their children (and the teachers) were doing at all times.
I feel it protected me and I was very glad for it.
I think ALL school buses should have cams on them as well.

I can't think of any situation where an officer would take his weapon off his person unless he is entering a courthouse or a jail. Most would laugh at you if you asked them to disarm while in uniform or on duty.
