I’m almost never a fan of unions, but in this case I think one could do some good.
They need to form then go to the respective government and show them they should be the gatekeepers of Everest. Should be able to guarantee safety standards for both clients and the local people. Set minimum requirements for both climbing and guiding. Set safe maximums on numbers of permits issued.
It would, though, take several of the biggest guiding companies and a handful of today’s most established climbers to all sign on with the plan.

I think part of the allure of the type A alpha appeal was the risk of your life to accomplish the climb?

Back in the day, it was hard to climb Mt Everest
What makes it so easy now and what’s the risk/reward???
I climb a mountain: okay cool
I died climbing a mountain and my body was left on said mountain to rot: not cool

Or you can climb any number of 13 or 14ers in the Mountain West and probably only see a few other people.

I agree with that. I meant that the “union” could make sure that those climbing are actually experienced enough and that their guides are top notch and not just fly-by-night group.

The only things on K2 are death and giant brass balls. The Pakistanis were like "frick it. Don't even name it and maybe it won't notice us.".

It's just the increased demand for selfies.

They don’t really rot up there so you’d have that going for you.

no way I'm not going to go full freak out mode watching my oxygen slowly diminish.
One of the issues is novice climbers don't regulate the O2 well. When you get stopped like that you need to cut you Os back to 1 liter per minute but many will leave their regulator at 3-4lpm because it feels so much better. The older but still most used 3L bottles have 720 liters of oxygen so that's 12 hours at 1lpm but many novices will suck them dry in 3 hours.

Well obviously
It’s not even a climb anymore
The sherpas do all the work for the cash

I read this one a while back. It is just a crazy mess all the way around. Too many climbers too few climbing days.

The Earth is a better place every time one of these attention whores bites the dust.

I guess it is one thing to die in an effort to climb it, but an entirely different thing to die from the negligence of inconsiderate people and governments too dependent on tourism income. The overcrowding issue is entirely avoidable and just as deadly as other obstacles legit climbers face.
