The panhandle, generally, is very safe when it comes to sharks. You'd be shocked at how many are out by the second breaker, but they're not interested in people.

Probably. Sharks, generally, only attack humans because they confuse them for food. That's why most shark attacks happen in murky water where they confuse other things for their food sources.
It's the very reason why you shouldn't swim near a dune lake or another water source emptying out into the ocean. Makes the water more muddy.
You also shouldn't swim at dawn or dusk, feeding time for most sharks.
The panhandle, for the most part, has pretty clear water. We're down at our condo a handful of times a year and it can be murky, but it's usually far more clear than a lot of other areas. We still wont swim right where the dune lakes empty into the Gulf.

New Smyrna Beach is the shark bite capital of the world, I believe. I have a friend who lives there and we've talked about it before.

I didn't know her, but I was about 100 yards away from the Gonzales teenager that was killed by a shark. Happened about 12 or 13 years ago I believe.
I remember still seeing her body board in the water as I was in it. Needless to say after learning what happened, I immediately got out of the water.

I know a commercial diver that got swallowed up to his waist by a grouper. He was able to free himself but that has to be a experience.

Diving equipment was later found. The next day around 3 p.m., a floating body (which was missing its left arm) was sighted from a helicopter in the waters between Manana Island and Makai pier. Several large sharks, apparently reacting to the helicopter's presence, proceeded to devour all but the body's torso and legs before it could be retrieved.[44]

I gotcha. I was a year behind her brother for elementary and high school.
