It's likely she doesn't want y'all to have to literally clean up her shite. And that's admirable of her. It sucks getting old.

I’m very sorry for your situation. Stay strong.

Why so she can only qualify for a Medicaid facility? I understand that people don’t want to spend money for a nursing home but a Medicaid facility will get you what you pay for. Absolutely nothing.

However, there are some atypical homes that provide superb care, nice, clean, and pts are well cared for and comfortable.
Yes, but for MOST people those nursing homes are prohibitively expensive.

Assisted living is a nice place to wind down. They typically have their own apartments, media rooms, libraries and good food.
Nursing homes are death's waiting room and often a place to warehouse the dying to avoid watching a loved one die.
Never been in one I've found pleasant. Nursing homes are also magnets for predators -- as are all places with weak people.
If you have the means and ability, in home care with a nurse is a much preferred option in my opinion. Probably costs about the same.

Nursing homes are a place where old people go to be forgotten about but they also manage to take all their money before they die

I’ve looked at nursing/assisted living in Vietnam/Thailand. Very reasonable.

My grandmother was in assisted living and when alzheimers got too bad she was moved to nursing home section.
My mom and step grandad were in assisted living.
As others have said you have to do your homework and find good ones. Food and care in assisted living was good, not cheap but good care. Lots of activities and good caregivers.
In Ontario once you go into nursing home it's palliative care, food and care are good but ppl are at deaths door. Nursing home care is covered by provincial health insurance but assisted living is on your nickel.

If the only place I could go was Flannery Oaks (idk, maybe this place is nice now? it wasn't years ago), I would hope I die first.
I had a relative who lived there. It didn't seem too bad to me.

First off, she would be on Medicare.
Second, nursing homes can go after assets if the cost is not covered.

75-80% of people in nursing homes are on medicaid. A nursing home may only take private pay initially, but once you've spent down all your assets and impoverished yourself, they'll switch you over. Even Lambeth House in New Orleans, the assisted living place for Uptown ballers, takes medicaid under those circumstances.

Medicare only pays for a nursing home if the patient is rehabbing, and then only for 100 days maximum. In practice, it's usually only approved for a week or two. Once you 're deemed recovered, or that the rehab is no longer helping, or you hit the 100 day limit, you have to find some other way to pay for it. Either private pay, long term care insurancd or medicaid.

That's a common misconception. It's not the nursing home, it's the state that will try to recoup what it spent on your medicaid by filing a claim against whatever assets you have left when you die. Your house is exempt as long as you live, so usually that's the only asset left. The state will file a lien against the property so it will get its cut when the heirs sell it. There are ways around this but it's complicated and you need a lawyer or CPA who specializes in this field.
Unfortunately I know more about this stuff than I would like to, having lived through it with my mother.

Yes, both grandmothers.
Really depends on the place, and how much you come to visit.
Check the place out before making a decision.

My mom had a stroke on 2020 along with dementia, she was paralyzed on her left side at the age of 82. She needed around the clock care I didn’t have a lot of money or options. Me and my sister visited several nursing homes as they have “ nurses” on staff 24/7 We decided to put her at Landmark in Hammond as it seemed better than the others. It was bad very bad. These aids and nurses( I think they ones that couldn’t cut it at hospitals) are for the most part the most evil people out there ( in my opinion)I had to put a camera in her room, had to pay for internet because Landmark wouldn’t let me use theirs Covid hit and the home was on lockdown which made worse. I would sit by her window for hours every day after work. I still have nightmares. Worst experience of my life. My advice would be go there at night and see how many people you see working there. Maybe three cars in the parking lot My mom passed in 2021. Doesn’t a day go by without me thinking about her

We have offered to move her in with us, but she doesn't want to bother us she says.
The elderly don’t want to feel like a burden, so you might need to just tell her “this is how we’re doing it till we can’t”

My 70 year old Grand mother went in to rehab a broken hip, she died two months later at the same Phylicity. My wifes Grandmother died in the N.H with dementia. My Mother-in-law is showing early stages of dementia now. We bought a mobile home on the lake where she lives and go down every weekend. although she says it aint happening, I don't think it will be too long before she has to move in with us. Kind of showing me what I will be dealing with when my wife gets up in her years.

Medicare doesn't cover nursing homes. If she spends down all her assets as you eluded to she will be a Medicaid patient.
