And this:
“Discipleship and spiritual formation are less about erecting an edifice of knowledge than they are a matter of developing a Christian know-how that intuitively understands the world in light of the Gospel.”

I wouldn't phrase it that way, but what you're fishing for, yes. He's not Richard Rohr.

I wasn't "fishing for" anything. Heck, Joel Osteen never stepped on a toe in his life... and well... I think we'd both agree on him. And leave it at that.

Yes, we'd agree on him.
I guess, ultimately, I'm very much liturgical and I'm assuming that you are not. That's the main difference.

James 3?

That’s a very brief snippet about not being a teacher at the beginning. To my knowledge, church structure is something never addressed in the New Testament. I think that’s quite intentional….

Maybe clergy need to stop being hypocrites. They beg for the collection plate to be filled, then frick the women of the congregation, and diddle boys and girls.

Keep following and filling that collection plate though, that's all that matters to them

You do realize that the vast majority of US churches are so small they would never make any man rich. A growing number of pastors are bi-vocational. You have to be very uniquely gifted to grow a mega church. If your desire is to get rich being a pastor is probably not your best bet for a vocation.

I hate this so much. Though I have not listened to him in recent years back in high school in the 1990's I used to order his tapes through the mail. He may be the best preacher I have ever heard at using illustrations. I was also impressed with the things their church put into place in the inner city to promote strong families and lift people out of poverty. These failings like this make me so sick at a time when we need strong men to lead Christian Communities.

No. I'm not. I'm 2 or 3 songs, baptisms, then announcements, then the special, then sermon, invitation and done. That's also an easy Hour and 15 to Hour and a half as well.

That's what I was used to growing up. Then went to a Bible Church then became Presbyterian after 3-4 years away from church.

"Why would the Devil try to convince you God doesn't exist in that case? "

If you have to ask that question then you truly do not know what the Devil is nor how he works. He doesn't want you to believe in God because to do so would make it harder for him, the devil, to manifest himself in your life. He wants your soul, make no bones about it. Every lost soul he gathers will help keep him company in the eternity of hellfire he will suffer when God returns. Satan wins every time you denounce God and Christ.
For those of us who love God, it is our duty to tell you about Him. If we were about to see you walk across the street with a speeding cement truck barrelling upon you, what would it say about us if we did not alert you to the danger. Choosing to mock God, deny his existence, and make foolish remarks about those who do believe, IMO, reinforces the fact that many are insecure about their absence of belief. If I did not believe in Santa Claus, I would not mock him, nor make fun of those who do, nor try to convince others that he does not exist. Why should I? It is nothing to me.
The only thing I will say is that there will be a day when we all face our Creator., or so I believe. If I am wrong, I have lost nothing. If you are wrong, you have lost everything, and eternity is a long time for regret.

"Why go?"

Why do you hang out on SecRant?

Perhaps it is because of like minded group of people who challenge you, provoke thought and conversation, and remind you that you love sports.
For some of the same reason, this is why you go to church. To gather together with likeminded individuals who want to worship God, enjoy some fellowship, share in their needs and praises, and to pray for one another.
You are right. God doesn't need man, but yet he created him for a purpose. We have a free will to exercise, and God gives us the chance to see what good he can offer to us. I think for many Christians, the promise of eternal bliss vs. eternal pain and suffering is not a difficult choice.

I hate this has happened to this minister. One problem we have is that we put these people on a pedestal, making them "rockstars" and showcasing their abilities. When they fall from grace, and they almost all do, because man is a sinful creature, it makes us, them, and God look foolish.

I don't. At all...

I wasn't saying "why go to church?" I was saying "why go?" if this is all you get: an intellectual exercise for the listener and a showy rhetorical performance from the speaker. Because that's all a lot of Baptist and non denominational churches are.
