This doesn't bother me be because I was never in the military and also because Darwin will take care of the slackers anyway.

West Point cadet apparently texting on her cellphone while marching in formation at graduation on Saturday has sparked outrage.
The skies are truly falling!
The World would be so much better if everyone started to mind their own damn business again. Quick to jump on board with any/everything to feel apart of a 'group' or 'trend'.
How do you know she wasn't given permission to use the phone? Extenuating circumstances?

Well there are lots of military guys posting in this thread and we all think it is a big deal so maybe you could just take our word for it.
Hmm, so then if the president does something stupid we can't comment on it since we've never been the president?
Sorry but the outrage in this thread is worse than the texting to me. Maybe she deserves a reprimand I don't know but holy shite find something worthy to focus your rage on.

Stonewall Jackson would've had her shot.

Civilizations are dismantled brick by brick until you've removed enough bricks that the whole thing comes crashing down.
If you don't think a watering down of our armed forces, a relative lack of discipline, etc are bad things, then you must think our military strength and discipline weren't good things in the first place. Do you think that? Do you think strict military discipline was an idea drummed up just for the hell of it by some evil white men?

To those that think this is not a big deal, remember this. She is the standard bearer for her platoon. She is the one, in conjunction with her platoon sergeant, that ensures all Soldiers comply with instructions. Her selfish actions indicate she does not have the personal discipline to do this. It was more important to complete her individual task than it was to function as a member of the whole.
No big deal, right?
She is the one who on three hours sleep will have to inspect the Soldier that will not draw and pack the extra two smoke grenades as instructed. So we will not have smoke to cover our movement or signal the helicopter. Or the one that will not carry the extra belt of 7.62 ammunition and the M240 will go dry in the fight. Who will leave the IFAK back at the TAA and an individual will bleed out.
It is the small things.

This is how I know you have never been in the military. Way too many slackers advance too high into the ranks. This is especially true in the Navy. Anytime you have people take a test to advance in rank you are going to get a metric crapton of people that shouldn't advance who do advance.
I believe all services auto-advance officers to O-3 as well. That is unsat because you have a lot of slackers and POSs who end up advancing to O-4.
Many of the "slackers" you see in this video will go on to command battalions and regiments.
If we ever get into a major conflict again, the first year or two is going to suck for us because of trial and error. We are going to find that a lot of our NCOs and junior officers are sub-par and not up to the challenge of leading military personnel in a wartime situation.

Why don't you stop deflecting and answer his question?

Was she the first cadet in history that did something inappropriate or forbidden? No. Did she get caught on camera? Yes. Was it in bad taste? Probably. Are the old timers upset? Yes.
Don't have a fricking panic attack that the Chinese are going to invade tomorrow because they saw there is a lack of discipline within the cadet ranks.

Cadet texting
There is a command to release a formation from marching in step. It is Route Step, which anyone who served in the Army would know.
There is no command for grabbing your phone and checking social media...your phone is NOT part of your uniform.

I'm sorry, were you physically there? Are you a fellow cadet of hers? Commanding Officer? Any involvement with this picture besides posting about it on a message board?
I get there are rules, but don't be so quick to the punch that special circumstances weren't made in order for her to use the phone. Someone else previously stated that it was probably a family member that was lost/looking for where to be.
Maybe there was a personal matter that was being attended to? I don't think West Point would be so cruel to say no to a cadet on using a phone to be updated about a family member being ill or other emergency situations, especially in 2016.

The Army absolutely should not give a shite. It can wait.

Wtf does "2016" have to do with anything? It's the same Army that sent men to die to stop the Germans in WW2. Cruel has nothing to do with it.
