Why should customers pay extra for a natural disaster?

Can utility companies not insure their property/infrastructure against natural disasters like all other businesses do?

What's up with the wooden poles, I know metal one's are more expensive, but it seems like they could more metal one's up, just one frustrating thing

May be self insured or captive.

1) No, they can't. It is insanely difficult and expensive to insure essential services and public utilities. That is why your taxes are what they are.

2) Even if they could, they would pass that cost on to their consumers like all other businesses do.

Sure, they can insure the infrastructure, install metal/concrete poles, bury transmissions lines, design everything to withstand 300mph winds. And then we pay for it and they make even more profits because they are allowed a percentage profit on any capital improvements. And then people see even higher bills. Entergy offers some of the lowest energy costs in the country.

I also want to add that the low energy costs also attract all of the large industrial customers from all over the world to build here and create jobs for a large portion of the state.

Way more than 3-4 times more expensive. But the O&M is much cheaper.

This sounds good if you want like $1000/month bills.

If you are unhappy with your bill now you will be suicidal if they go all underground.

Depends on how many magnitudes more expensive it is than these periodic fixes.

I could see water table issues in New Orleans too

It’s pretty $$. The last transmission project I worked was about $3M a mile rural and $10M a mile urban. That’s just for the 340kV lines. Then you have a metric frick ton of distribution that’s not really much cheaper because the wire cost isn’t a big deal. It’s having a shite load of HDD or bedded open trench.

And because of the water issues you’re most likely putting everything in HDPE.

It costs 10x to bury transmission lines (if the terrain even allows).

Also people need to quit comparing their bill month over month. Of course it’s going to be higher in August and September than it will be in April and May.
