Well Florida has been doing something about it while Entergy sits on a pile of money for shareholders.

article from 2013 about the hurricane proof power poles in Florida

And sure Irma still knocked out power to the county but repairs were much faster because not a single pole needed to be replaced. Imagine if half of our 113,000 poles damaged from Ida had been reinforced concrete.

321 distribution poles….

In Ida Entergy lost over 30,000 distribution poles. So that proactive approach of changing out a few hundred would have meant diddly squat

Guess how much higher rates are in Florida? You don't know what you are talking about.

About $.12-.13 in the Panhandle and maxes out at about .$19-20 in Miami. State average is about $.14-.15.

Entergy, with the delivery charges are about $.11-$.13 in Louisiana soooooo…

Seems like they’re getting a lot better bang for their buck.

Cleco is slightly lower but nope I’m not.

They market to you that it’s $.08 per kWh but go do a bill breakdown. It’s all based on your demand but you’re probably paying $.12 per kWh when you factor in the delivery charges.

And you pay less, and more or less have power year round. So you just like to complain then?

Can someone explain how it is 10x to bury line's? I am just trying to figure out where the bulk of the cost is coming from.

I was burning $50 of gas a day on my generator. $5-15 a day on their power is a lot easier to swallow

Well which is it? Am I lying about the rate or do I just like to complain? Or do you just not know what the hell you’re talking about?

Not to mention the lost economic activity and corresponding tax revenue while the power is down.

Entergy has basically the cheapest rates in the country. So you are lying. And like to complain about nothing evidently. Every external source has la cheaper than Florida. You are a hack.

Big drills are expensive. HDPE is expensive. And you have to drop a splice vault every 3000ish feet. It’s mostly labor.

ETA. The cycle time for 1 3000’ section is about 70 days from breaking ground to spliced.

Drills/boring equipment for existing but couldn't you trench for new construction which would be substantially cheaper?

Concrete poles?
Metal poles?

Timber lobbyists would never allow it.

It’s always a blend of HDD and trench. Just depends on the terrain, obstructions, etc.

As far as cost, trenching is usually cheaper as long as you don’t get into any bedding issues, which usually creep up. They you’re buying so much shite to make it stable and you have all the shoring crap. It’s really not a big swing one way or the other. Especially if you just give someone a couple billion and they go hit up Vermeer for a few big boys.

This makes sense but out of curiosity does underground cabling require larger cross-section wires in the cables to match the ampacity of above-ground cables?

More like every 10-20 years
