Per Wikipedia:
The other nuke plant, San Onofre, was shut down in 2013 after replacement steam generators failed. I think PG&E is broke/bankrupt so pouring more money into this plant is not an option.
You could repower these stations with gas-fired turbines and boilers and at least recoup your investment in the generating and distribution equipment (assuming the other economics pan out), but California is moving towards complete decarburization at breakneck speed, consequences be damned, so this option is DOA.
I read this article and the first thing that came to mind was the :Seinfeld That's a Shame: GIF, but if California exports this mindset like they do so many others, we're all in for a world of hurt.

Though it was built less than a mile from the Shoreline fault line, which was not known to exist at the time of construction, and is located less than three miles from the Hosgri fault, a 2016 NRC probabilistic risk assessment of the plant, taking into account seismic risk, estimated the frequency of core damage at one instance per 7.6 million reactor years.

Nergy is a national thing. We have multiple military bases in California as well as tmone of the countries largest ports.

Dont trust obviously left or right leaning media sources. Haven't heard this at all and there are many public charging stations.
I dont deny there are infrastructure issues nationwide and in Ca. We notoriously use other states resources while protecting our own, But both "news: sources in this thread are bullshite.

Sounds like Sophie's Choice II - do I charge my car or run my central AC?
Posted on 6/29/21 at 10:34 am to Abstract Queso Dip
so now ‘Nergy’ is a critical piece of infrastructure and should be a priority in state and federal tax spending?

jenn, for the record: what approved news sources would you recommend us listen to?

Even though the state’s tattered electric grid can barely meet existing demand – and more rolling blackouts are almost certain this summer – California continues to pile bad policy on top of bad policy. The state has banned the future sale of cars powered by internal combustion engines which will result in dramatic increases in electricity demand and will require, according to a recent report by the California Energy Commission, the installation of 1.2 million new EV charging stations by 2030. Bans on natural gas will further increase electricity demand. Cheered on by the Sierra Club, which is getting tens of millions of dollars from billionaire Michael Bloomberg, about 46 California communities have banned the use of natural gas in homes and businesses. Making the whole thing even more absurd, is that California is pledging to achieve these goals while closing the state’s last remaining nuclear power plant, the Diablo Canyon Power Plant, which by itself produces nearly 10% of all the juice consumed in California
I mean holy shite

That isn’t just bad policy, it is insane policy.
When people talk about moving to EVs and Scruffy’s response revolves around our infrastructure being unable to support it, this is EXACTLY what he is talking about.
CA is merely a microcosm of the energy and energy distribution problems we will face with poor policies that put the cart before the horse.

Come on San Andreas fault.

Yeah both Nergy and energy should be considered federal infrastructure with states sharing responsibility. Just like pipelines, walls, airports, roads, water reservoirs, you know the things vital to America thriving. You could even throw in sattelites, radio and cell towers too but those should be independently operated. The more the stuff falls apart the easier it will be to invade our country.

A special kind of stupid, closing nuclear plants when adding them is the answer.

Sounds like they could really use some sustainable clean coal

just centralized and federalize everything huh? you’d like that i bet. I’m also absolutely sure that would the most efficient way to get these issues resolved and future proofed
