Have heard if you are employed as a professor at LSU and work at another company at the same time, LSU can take a percentage of your income. Can anyone tell me if there is any truth to this or clarify what it actually entails?

I've taught as an adjunct and no one took a part of my pay.

What would be the reasoning behind them being able to do that?

I was skeptical at what I heard hence why I asked the question. If anyone with knowledge of health and human sciences at LSU might chime in, that was the specific college.

They may be talking about the retirement plan. They have a separate retirement system and don't pay into social security. In that case, if you have a second job that does pay into social security, you get a reduced social security check when you retire. It sucks and it's unfair, but that's the law.

How much did they pay you for the class? What percentage of student tuition is slotted for the class?

...they took part of your pay.

From what I was told it was related to percentage of pay at the other job. Again, sounds ridiculous which is why I was hoping someone with direct knowledge could chime in.

No, it is false. LSU makes faculty disclose outside employment with a PM-11, but they do not take a percentage of your salary.

There's more to it than that. You actually pay a penalty on your social security earnings. Plus your spouse doesn't get a survivor benefit.

You have to disclose outside employment and be prepared to address potential conflicts of interest. But they can't take away pay so long as you are still doing the same amount of work.

Well... not on social security. In theory, they are hopefully opting out of it for TRSL Pension or a 457; which would hopefully be more valuable than SS anyway.

In my experience, if you come up with an idea or invention while working there, they take some type of cut. That's how it was for two projects I worked on, but I wasn't the professor, so idk.

As far as actually being employed elsewhere or consulting, they don't take money

Out of curiousity, if one wanted to teach one section a semester, how would they go about that?

If you're using overhead and resources attributable to LSU, then the university technically has the right to proceeds from the endeavor. This doesn't have to pertain solely to IP or patent style work but also general consulting.
