'Even the cockroaches won't survive': Expert discusses Hezbollah's new EMP weapon
By MATAN WASSERMAN Published: JULY 28, 2024 11:10?Smoke billows from a site targeted by Israeli shelling in the southern Lebanese border village of Tayr Harfa on July 24, 2024, amid ongoing cross-border clashes between Israeli troops and Hezbollah fighters.(photo credit: KAWNAT HAJU/AFP via Getty Images)
Rotem Mey-Tal, CEO of Asgard Systems, a company developing military technology for the defense industry discusses Hezbollah's new tactic and supply of electromagnetic ordnance.
The Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Jarida reported that Iran has supplied Hezbollah and other Iranian proxy forces with electromagnetic ordnance, which can disable communication systems and shut down radars. Rotem Mey-Tal, CEO of Asgard Systems, a company developing military technology for the defense industry and the initiator of the "30U30 in Defense" competition for 2024, discussed the issue.
First, what is electromagnetic ordnance?
"Describing electromagnetic ordnance is like talking about something no one has ever seen, but everyone understands exists and is present in reality—in our case, on the geopolitical and military chessboard of the Middle East. In essence, imagine lightning striking the building you live in, not hitting a lightning rod or antenna, but the entire building, causing all the electrical panels, water heaters, water and electrical systems, household appliances, computers, television systems, and even life-saving medical systems to stop working. It's like a power outage, but in this case, the systems can also burn out from the inside like in an electrical short."
Where is this threat aimed?
"I suspect the threat is more focused on bases, strategic facilities, desalination systems, and the Israeli power grid. However, it's impossible to say precisely, as such a weapon has never been used in history, so there are no sources or references to learn from."
BTW .... they're already probing us here.

I assumed it was implied the people there would eat them or something.
Honestly it doesn’t matter what weapon they use they’ll still be throwing rocks at each other until the end of time.

EMPs scare the shite out of me

Good thing they flew the fabled suitcase nuke over on United and it got lost at the airport

Try that in a small town.

I still can’t fathom how some terrorist group hasn’t snagged at least one nuke in the past 75 years.

I had a dream in the 80s that we got attacked by a foreign power with EMPs long before I had ever imagined such. It was freightning

This book was written over 15 years ago and Newt Gingrich warned Congress....to no avail.

After reading the book about them it’s one of those things I can’t stop thinking about. I’m always trying to think of different issues that I’d encounter and how I’ll deal with it

EMPs, like any other weapon, are not 100% effective. Had a lightning striike adjacent to my house that produced an EMP. Took out a lot of stuff, but not everything. It got one of my two AC units, which were side by side, about half my home theater gear, but not the brand new TV on the same surge protector, got my washer, but not my dryer, got my range, but missed the adjacent and much more computerized oven, but also got the GE Advantium microwave/convection oven, completely missed my computer and associated gear, all of which were right on the other side of the wall from the knocked out AC unit. Also missed my downstairs home theater setup, which was between the AC unit and the knocked out appliances.
Lightning strikes are GW events, and this one barely affected the houses on either side of me. One had breakers popped, the other just got a power flash. The was a postage stamp lot 'hood, with no more than 10' between houses. I kind of doubt that the Iranians have produced an EMP capable of more than a lightning strike. In fact, I kind of doubt they've produced one that can match a lighting strike. It's going to be a terror weapon, but not strategically or tactically effective. Just an engineer's opinion.

The danger of EMPs is vastly overstated. To use them effectively over an entire country would require a vast supply of them and air supremacy over the country. The number of ground-detonated EMPs to have a massive impact on a country would be magnitudes greater than air-detonated ones. Local chaos, sure, but even regional chaos would require massive assets.

I’m more concerned about intense solar flares.
Astronomers Richard Carrington and Richard Hodgson independently observed patches of intensely bright light on the solar surface shortly before the Earth was hit by a very strong solar storm. The following day, strange things started happening; the northern lights were seen farther south than ever recorded before, and telegraph operators reported getting shocked by their equipment and seeing arcs of electricity sparking due to the powerful electric currents flowing through the wires.
Some reports mentioned telegraphs that were able to send messages without being plugged in and some that received nonsense messages that nobody had sent—because the atmosphere was so charged. Some telegraph stations that used chemicals to mark sheets reported that powerful surges caused the telegraph paper to combust.
Overall, this event caused widespread global outages and was determined to be the strongest flare to be observed in 500 years. It has come to be known as the Carrington Event.
No telling what damage this would cause today and there’s no defense against it or when it could occur again. This happened in 1859.

Danger from EMPs is ignored by our government. They will affect the grid. They will affect many cars. So much stuff will be affected that a lot of it will not get running again for a long, long time. There won't be enough repair parts. Roads will be clogged with abandoned vehicles. Parts of the grid that are damaged will be damaged for a long time, as we don't have the repair parts for that either.
Anyone want to guess how medical supplies, medications, food, and fuel will get delivered after a series of EMP's? How about air conditioning or heating especially for the old, the young, and the sick?
As for this article - it's propaganda from Israel to get more US support for their war.
Any sophisticated adversary, however, can make use of EMP's should we get into a conflict. EMP's are only part of the problem though - everything in space will be targeted. Take a guess on how our economy is going to run if all the satellites are gone.
We have serious vulnerabilities in any modern warfare scenario.

I wish i could have one that i could carry in my vehicle and fire at cars with excessive bass
All that boom boom booming boom crap rattling their trunks and giving me a headache would stop with a quickness that way
“People that annoy you”

An entire generation of US citizens would commit suicide because they would no longer have social media.
