Because for some weird fricking reason, it's illegal to make someone prove that a dog is actually certified. Not sure if it's from the ADA or what.

i doubt it is illegal and more bad PR.

Just a note about emotional support animals:

quote:

Although ESAs provide support through companionship and can help ease anxiety, depression, and certain phobias, they are not service dogs and do not have the same rights.
quote:

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines service animals as “dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities.” The act clearly states that those animals that simply provide emotional comfort do not qualify as service animals under the ADA.

Go look up the ada code guys. If the owner says it’s an emotional support dog, then it’s one. There is no certification, or proof or anything. And yes asking someone to prove is illegal as you can vilolate disability rights. You can only ask if it is a service dog. Yes it’s obsurd.
Reminds me when I was flying and a woman claimed her Yorkie was an emotional support dog. And the dog was scared to death the whole flight. Shaking and compulsing. You can tell me that was providing “emotional support.”
It’s really sad because people take advantage of the law to travel with their pets, but it should be reserved for legit reasons like seeing eye dogs.

Edit: i mean not saying an emotional support dog but referring to the dog as a service dog provides all protection.

Did we always have this many retards running around in society and perhaps we just hear about them more now? I hope that's the case.

It's certainly out of hand.

I was playing poker at Beau Rivage one night and this woman was sitting at the table with this little yip dog in her lap.

The real problem is the chop shop shrinks who give people a certificate for 20 bucks after an online questionnaire. There are people who actually need ESA's... Lots of my buddies I served with have ESA dogs that really do help with their PTSD. The service ones are obviously way better because the animal is trained. It's companies like this and the owners who should be held accountable. The airlines can't police this BS.

There should be no such thing as an “emotional support animal”

You're wrong. The ADA covers service animals, not ESA. BIG BIG difference. All airlines require documentation requiring a licensed therapist to prescribe an ESA.

Yes there should.

But it should have actual definitions and standards, not just a check box on a piece of paper.

I can't imagine a pitbull causing a disturbance on an airplane.

Congress needs to amend the ADA and close these loopholes.

They should sue the doctor that supported the need for an emotional support animal. That side of the coin is total bullshite too.

If you need an emotional support animal to fly, you don't need to fricken fly. Flying is trying at times, even for normal people.

Shouldn't even allow "emotional support animals" on flights in the first place. Get an actual service animal or gtfo.

The outfit I work for doesn't allow them.

I think it is two things. One, just like child abductions we now hear about everyone coast to coast when we only used to hear about ones that were reasonably local unless it was particularly gruesome. Second, reporting on ESAs lets more people know about them so more people use them. In the "old" days it would have gone on more or less in the dark for many years until 60 minutes did a story on it. It has now become a "hack" to travel with your pet.

Good for them.
So far I haven’t had to sit next to a freakin dog on a plane but I’m not looking forward to the inevitable.

I wonder how it would play out if someone who was seated beside the person with the yippy chihuahua on a plane said that dogs make them emotionally anxious because they had been attatcked by one in the past.

Maybe someone should try that out and if the airline doesn’t accommodate their “emotional” concerns....sue the airline. I would like to see how that would shake out.
