Never understood how a man trapped in Alexandria didn't go crazy of boredom. It looks like Monroe went back to the 1940's.

Ellick is a middling town with no identity or special qualities. Few original restaurants. No good bars. Not much in the way of entertainment. It's just there in the middle.

Three traffic circles in the state, and Alex had two of them.

You can thank the Manguns for that

Yeah not sure on all of the specifics but LSU started right across the river in pineville for the sons of wealthy farmers and war participants. It's size can probably be attributed to the early lift off from that and trade/transportation on the river but it's like it got stuck right after lift off way back then. There's substantial wealth there all things considered but little culture or identity just work, play and sleep. It's a peculiar vibe.

quote:Every local paper that Gannett takes over goes downhill. The only reason any of them survive is USA Today.
Opelousas Daily World announced a three day delivery this week also.
The Daily World was a good paper at one time (yeah, I know the "The Daily Error" jokes). But, I've got a great story about that paper if anyone is interested.
Anyway, a copy of The Daily World is in the Smithsonian Museum because it was the first off-set printing press in the U.S., which became the standard printing form for almost all newspapers for decades.
Gannett's first move when taking over The Daily World? Shut down the local press.
Gannett takes over local papers, makes them conform to national standards, then reduces staff as their edicts abandon local flavor.
Gannett is the kiss of death for a hometown newspaper.

While we are talking about the Town Talk, their sport writer, Bill Carter, was one of the best in the state.

And the bumper stickers saying "Guess again, Bill Day".

We'll be reading a similar thread about the Shreveport Times (Garnett) in a couple years, if not sooner.
They're trying to focus on local coverage, finally, but it's 20 years too late. No one buys the Times to read about national news that we get on TV, web, etc. hours or days earlier.
Yet, the Times dropped a local food writer who was paid peanuts, and when the Journal folded, the Times did not pick up the local history column by Eric Brock, which was the most discussed newspaper piece in the city. Those are exactly the kinds of things they should have been emphasizing. Idiots did it to themselves.
