Every local paper that Gannett takes over goes downhill. The only reason any of them survive is USA Today.
Not just newspapers.
Gannett bought Belo. Belo owned a number of tv stations including WWL. Gannett combined their tv stations with the Belo purchase and spun them into a new company, Tegna, but with Gannett people running it.
WWL-TV is falling fast.

3 day a week is stupid.
My issue with T-P/Nola.com isn't that they cut the days they print. My issue is they fired most of the good reporters and replaced them with bloggers, and apparently fired every editor they had.
95 percent of what is posted there on a daily basis is hot garbage.

I've got a great story about that paper if anyone is interested.
In one swoop, Gannett bought The Daily World (Opelousas, Eunice), and The Advertiser (Lafayette). The Advertiser was always a shite newspaper, while The Daily World was a local favorite, known for good reporting and great photography. (How could it not be, in what is considered "The Bread Basket of Cajun Country"?)
The Daily World was an afternoon paper, typically going to press about 11 a.m., distributed to newspaper boxes about 3 p.m.
The Advertiser was an early morning paper, competing with "The Advocate Acadiana." Gannett immediately made it clear that it wanted the Opelousas paper to be subservient to The Advertiser.
On Sept. 11, 2001., around 9 a.m., when The Daily World was wrapping up its final edits for its afternoon edition, the TV in the newsroom broke in to show the first tower of the World Trade Center on fire. Nobody knew what was happening.
A reporter said, "I wonder if it's a terrorist attack." Seconds later, the second plane hit. "It is a terrorist attack!"
The Daily World printing plates were on the press, ready to go. The chief editor was literally told, "Stop the press!"
As info came in, The Daily World was updating it's front page, going to be the first one in Acadiana to print the news.
Gannett insisted that their big fish, The Advertiser, should be the first.
But, the press operator intervened. "We ain't waiting on an incomplete paper versus one that is plated up and ready to roll!"
Roll, it did.
The Daily World was the first newspaper printed in Louisiana headlining the terror attack that awful day.
I contend, it was one of the first printed regular editions in the entire country. All the rest were "Special Editions!" printed after The Daily World.

A guy I know told me his daughter met Babs Zimmerman at a job fair recently. I had no idea she was still alive.

Going to a three day a week print edition a la the Times Picayune starting next month

Local government corruption is going to absolutely soar across the country with the collapse of small local papers. Even more so than usual in Louisiana...

Yeah not sure on all of the specifics but LSU started right across the river in pineville for the sons of wealthy farmers and war participants. It's size can probably be attributed to the early lift off from that and trade/transportation on the river but it's like it got stuck right after lift off way back then. There's substantial wealth there all things considered but little culture or identity just work, play and sleep. It's a peculiar vibe.
You know, this is such an accurate post without the vitriol often found in a Pineville/cenla thread. I grew up in Pineville and definitely understand this. Description of work, play and sleep is spot on. Only thing I would add in there is "eat", and do it a lot!
Cenla is actually a great place if you enjoy serenity and the outdoors. When we go home I always leave with a very peaceful vibe, life immediately slows down when we get around my family as we just sit and relax at my dads or out at the camp on Catahoula, where undoubtly a feast will be brewing. My little boy is at the age where we can start sending him to stay with his PawPaw and uncle for the weekends at the camp. I want him to have a smidgen of the experience I had growing up-being able to run wild at the camp, working on the duck blinds, learning to shoot skeet, and just living a slow/relaxed lifestyle.

Ellick died when my aunt and uncle died. I have no reason to visit that town any more.
