RIP

quote:
Elie Wiesel, the Auschwitz survivor who became an eloquent witness for the six million Jews slaughtered in World War II and who, more than anyone, seared the memory of the Holocaust on the world’s conscience, died on Saturday at his home in Manhattan. He was 87.
Menachem Rosensaft, a longtime friend and the founding chairman of the International Network of Children of Jewish Survivors, confirmed the death in a phone call. Mr. Wiesel was the author of several dozen books and was a charismatic lecturer and humanities professor.
In 1986, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. But he was defined not so much by the work he did as by the gaping void he filled. In the aftermath of the Germans’ systematic massacre of Jews, no voice had emerged to drive home the enormity of what had happened and how it had changed mankind’s conception of itself and of God. For almost two decades, both the traumatized survivors and American Jews, guilt-ridden that they had not done more to rescue their brethren, seemed frozen in silence.

Clever.
But Wiesel offered the unique perspective of someone who lived through the camps. Sadly, Anne Frank's voice was silenced with the raid on their hiding place. Wiesel emerged from the other side.
RIP to him, hoping he's greeted with applause and thanks by the millions for whom he spoke that never got the chance.

I think if I get there and I'm seated at Hitler's table at the dinner buffet, my thoughts are going to be, well that sucks. Pit barbeque for eternity, I guess.

He was a good writer but a fraud in that the supposed drama of his life is a fabrication.

I know a lot of Christians that would not bat an eye at this.

Wiesel was a asset to humanity

You are right.
It did help his people to have a voice again especially after being through all of that.
It was unlike anything they have gone through, even what was retold in The Bible. Nothing really matches.

A couple of years ago, I had the good fortune of listening in person to a speech of Mr. Wiesel and even got to meet him afterward. He was charming and eloquent. I purchased a copy of his book and he autographed it for me. I felt honored to have met him.

I've read a couple of his books and have met more holocaust survivors than I can remember (grew up in a Jewish community). The people I know who did know him all said only the nicest things about him.
The interesting thing to me is all the survivors I ever met were the happiest people. Even when they told me stories about it they had a smile on their face and seemed almost eager to tell it. I guess once you've literally walked through hell the worst day is still nothing short of enjoyable.
