Electric cars cleaner than any gas-only car for 97 percent of U.S. drivers

The Union of Concerned Scientists released an updated version of its MPG-equivalencies map last week, showing what fuel efficiency would be necessary in a gasoline car to equal the carbon footprint of an electric car on different U.S. regional electric grids.

The group explains in detail the methodological changes it made to its latest estimates, but the crucial point remains the same: the grid mix varies considerably from state to state and region to region.

The West Coast and the Northeast have the lowest-carbon grids, meaning gasoline cars would have to get 70 mpg or better to be as clean as electric cars in those regions.

Other grids have lower equivalencies, but only one—in the Rocky Mountains—is below 40 mpg, using the most recent grid data (from 2014) and a sales-weighted average of 2016 electric-car sales.

Six regional grids fall between 41 mpg and 50 mpg, and everywhere else is higher than 50 mpg—with the best, in New York state above New York City, at a whopping 160 mpg.

In other words, to emit as little carbon per mile as an electric car charged on the New York state grid, a gasoline car would have to be rated at 160 miles per gallon. Which will never happen without a plug.

At some point we will make the switch to electric. There's really no way around it.

Do electric cars come with tiny, shriveled truck nuts?

Are they factoring in the emissions from the plants that produce the electricity that these cars run on?

How about the high levels of smug in the air?

And how much of the electricity for those electric cars is coming from a carbon emitting power plant?

As long as there is still gas, v-8s and pick ups, I doubt it; at least in the south.

Just got a Chevrolet Bolt.

But I have a short commute, don't use my car for cross country trips, and my apartment complex doesn't charge us for plugging up. I couldn't justify not getting an EV.

agreed, but its going to take a few more generations of battery evolution to get there.

Just so we're clear, you do realize that most electricity comes from the burning of fossil fuels right? More electricity usage = more fossil fuels burned = more pollution.

At best you would probably come out marginally ahead with carbon footprint, for an exorbitantly more expensive, less convenient vehicle. Leading to energy shortages and rolling blackouts, just so we can say that we're "green".

And leaps in solar power, as well as a public mandate. I imagine we will be there within 50 years...being optimistic of course.

wow, awesome. I wonder if that policy will remain after everyone pulls up in an EV car.
