The state of LA provides a "pauper cremation" service but I believe the body has to go unclaimed for some time after death
The ashes are then buried

If it was my body they can donate me to science or throw my arse in the gulf. At that point I don't really care.

Don't know a funeral home owner that isn't filthy rich. But hey, let's jack the prices more off of someone's misery and plight.

They would also have to do a quick and expensive succession to put a reverse mortgage on it now that he has passed.

Well you are very generous and she is being unreasonable.

Let me guess grand kid took out debt in their name with out permission and they refused to report it to the police.

That can still work if they work with a funeral home. It might cost them some interest.

I don't really understand that position. I have personal experience and it is far more peaceful and emotionally satisfying to visit a beautiful location where a loved-one's ashes were scattered than a cemetery. Not to mention cheaper and doesn't take up valuable space in urban areas.

Back when I was a kid, funeral homes would setup a payment plan for people to pay for the cost of a funeral, but that's not the case now, they want their money up front. Body donation is always an option.

Donate the body to science and just have a memorial service at their local church.

Cremation seems like the best policy in this case.
Plots plus funeral burial is expensive and big money.
