Thnaks to Boomers not retiring, forcing us to work shittier jobs with less benefits.

Vacation is part of my overall compensation package. I want it right up front, and if not I will quite certainly pass. I am fortunate enough to have a resume that allows me to have leverage when dealing with shite like this.

They're still employed because they're more valuable than you

You should get whatever pay and benefits you are skilled enough at negotiating. If you picked up vacation out of the gate as part of your hire bully for you. If you have to wait a year, you are green, desperate, or a bad negotiator.

But I'm just like, it's 3 days out of 9 months of employment. Is that horrible that I'd ask for that? And it's unpaid.
Yes that is horrible. This is Corporate 'Merica you lazy entitled socialist.

All new hires at my job have to go through the probationary year before you can dip into your earned time.
GUBMENT.

You work 7 days a week every week 12 months every year? What a dipshit.
Your company doesn't understand how delegation and management works or you failed the test.

earning your vacation is still pretty much the standard in US companies.
You sound like a terrible person to work for. You literally admitted that you give vacation arbitrarily to a new employee who has experience, but not to a new employee who doesn't. WTF is that? They are both new to YOU.

with the tenured team member, it wasn't a 100% that she couldn't have the time off,
You couldn;t give someone who has been there 10 years a week off? You better be taking apart people's fricking brains over there. Don't you dare tell me you're in customer service or some shite.

This whole thread has been interesting to read. Some really old school thoughts are still permeating through the country, I see... totally baseless and counter to all the research on the topic at hand.
If you are a manager or a business owner, you are in competition to hire the best employees on the market. In addition, you're in competition to retain the talent you have on hand.
Furthermore, vacation time allows employees a chance to refresh their batteries. All of the research on the topic shows that employees who take at least two weeks of vacation, and fully unplug during said vacation (no checking email, etc), are more productive and are more likely to be promoted.
When employees are encouraged to time off and have flexibility, it decreases their stress levels. It diminishes the 'Sunday Night Blues' that so many people feel at the end of the weekend.
For those who think this is just some new age, millennial bullshite, please read up on the topic. I encourage you to read the Harvard Business Review and discover what truly successful companies are doing to better situate themselves in a competitive marketplace of recruiting the most talented workers.

You want vacation, make yourself more valuable to the employer.

Lots of folks in this thread sure know how to walk the top talent right out the door.
Take very, very good care of your people.

Precisely.
The most talented employees typically understand their value to the market. They are going to shop themselves around. If you don't offer a healthy work environment with proper benefits and paid time off, then you won't be able to attract these talented people. You will end up hiring those who aren't as talented and likely will wind up having to spend time and resources (AKA money) on replacements at a much higher rate...
