Ed Sheeran has defeated a copyright infringement lawsuit involving his Grammy-winning song "Thinking Out Loud" and the Marvin Gaye classic "Let's Get It On."

A Manhattan jury has found the musician did not engage in willful copyright infringement following a trial that saw Sheeran playing guitar and singing in court.

The jury reached its decision after roughly three hours of deliberations.

Money grab by the Gaye estate

The two songs sound nothing alike

The Marvin Gaye family group is a bunch of simps. They sue people all the time for copyright infringement.

If you murdered the artist you should lose your right to sue others for money over what's not yours.

I'm glad he won, but they do sound very similar. Same as Stapleton's Tennessee Whiskey and Misty Blue.

Good. The reality is there’s only so many chord progressions to choose from in music. Melody is different, lyrics are different, key is different.

There are some similarities between the songs but I do not believe Ed Sheeran copied Marvin Gay and agree with the jury. Overtime as music progresses there are going to be inevitable inadvertent similarities between songs given the fact that the combinations of notes is a finite number, albeit a massive number (I believe that number is close to 12^12...which is a really big number).

I reluctantly agreed to take my stepdaughter (no pics) to a Ed Sheeran concert but it definitely was not what I was expecting. It was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. Dude is talented.

Look at the plaintiffs lawyer, Ben Crump.

When Ben Crump walks in a courtroom that should be grounds for automatic dismissal.

No shite.

If someone tried to copyright a G, C, D chord progression, that would eliminate 50% of songs created in all of recorded history.

Isn't that a David Allan Coe song?

Glad the courtroom had some common sense. No one listens to Thinking Out Loud and wonders if it’s that Marvin Gaye song.

I thought Vanilla Ice entered into an agreement with David Bowie and Queen and they received some royalties from Ice Ice Baby, right?
