Economy v. Lives Debate

It's strange how some have castigated those who want the economy to open up by labeling them as callous people who only care about the money vs. lives. They really don't understand how debilitating being unemployed and in poverty can be.
Also strange how some of those people a few months ago were preaching to us about a "living wage."

Those who live in their mom's basement dont care about unemployment. Its easy for them to be generous with other people's jobs when mom makes meatloaf!

pretty simple - you can choose to stay locked inside your home, if you don't have a job you can't choose to not pay your mortgage. Economy wins 1st rd knockout.

It's not an either/or debate. The normal functioning of our healthcare system has been severely impaired by this shutdown. The cost in lives due to that is mounting right now and will eventually pass the virus toll if this continues.
Plus, people are apparently oblivious to how vulnerable our debt ridden economy is to an economic shutdown. Printing money may seem like a painless solution to every economic disruption, but that's the furthest thing from the truth.

It's easy to care about lives at the expense of the economy when the federal and state governments are paying people 800 dollars plus a week to stay home. That's equal to or greater than most people make at their shitty jobs that they absolutely despise.
We'll see how long that altruism holds when Uncle Sam says "Sorry...money all gone" and drops everybody head first into a high unemployment environment.

I understand that was the original concern behind flattening the curve, but I haven't seen a single source which has said the virus has pushed our healthcare system past its capacity. Additionally, now some have reasoned that the quarantine orders are for saving as many lives possible. That was never the original reason behind flattening the curve.

It's a false choice. The careful balance comes with working better protected and minimizing interactions. I'm glad Trump has brought Mark Cuban into his economic taskforce. Cuban is 100% on point with smart ways to create jobs and grow out of this debt. (If not for his anti-2A position I'd probably vote for him.)
Good things came out of the 1st Great Depression, there's no reason why we can't do the same with projects to improve old school infrastructure. That along with things like expanding fiber so everyone has access to high speed internet is a smart way to put people to work. (Wouldn't mind seeing private companies put out of the business and it being a municipal bill ala water & sewage billing.) And if they're going to up the fed minimum wage they need to mandate disability policies and social security pay based on at least that $31,200 yearly minimum wage. (LTD currently pays less than the current unemployment checks I've seen people bitch about on TV...usually look a lot like those waiting in the weed line every Friday.)
This is also the time to look at reverting back to isolationism. The Chinese should not have us by the balls when it comes to something as important as medication. Hit reset and think big rather than just throwing money hoping our idiocracy will figure it out by just throwing money at the problem.

We are into a third generation of Lyndon Johnson created dependents of the Federal government. They DGAF about the economy and “their people” are dying in disproportionate numbers from this racist attack. They are also the ones all the blue governors are counting on for support.

At the end of the day folks don’t realize it doesn’t matter.
Folks have three options. Contract it and get better, contract it and die or wait for a vaccine. That’s it, there are no more moves.
If a vaccine is a year away waiting for it isn’t really a possibility. Is there some option these folks are aware of that I’m missing?

What I’ve seen is it’s usually the 60+ retirees who don’t worry about a paycheck or your typical government worker who also doesn’t worry about a paycheck.

I don’t think we need to revert to isolationism. But we need to take a serious look at how reliant we’ve become on imports, especially from China.
