Our school emailed us and said they would be taking the kids outside to view the eclipse.

Get your toilet paper while you still can.

I think you can buy some eclipse sunshades at Walmart and Target for a couple of bucks.
I stacked neutral density filters to take this eclipse pic at White Sands desert a few years ago.

We've got the entire school eclipse glasses. All teachers are speaking to the kids on the importance of keeping them on while looking up. It's an awesome experience for everyone.
I'm actually taking off to take my family up to Arkansas to be in the 100%.

Because some idiot kid will look at the eclipse without glasses and damage his eyes. Then the parents will sue the school and the district for not “doing enough” to protect the kid.
We literally had to have parents sign waivers in 2017 that wouldn’t hold the school or district responsible if the kid didn’t follow directions.

But... you'd have some dumbass tiktok challenge to see who could stare at it the longest, then somebody would go blind

Actually pretty smart lol. I’ve read about so many morons damaging their eyes recently it’s amazing.
i'm strangely friends with quite a few opthamologists and I saw one recently and asked how work was and he said:
"actually been very exciting. we are ramping up awareness to make sure people know not to stare at the eclipse, but then also bringing on staff for the people who won't listen to us afterwards. make sure you get NASA certified ISO ### glasses to look for your family."
was actually a humorous reaction from a pretty quiet guy.

But it's Alabama. You won't even know the eclipse is going on there. There's nothing to look at that you can see without having glasses on. You put glasses on and see the moon partially covering the sun while it's complete daylight around you.

You can look at the eclipse without glasses during totality when the moon completely blocks the sunlight.
If you look at a partial eclipse when you're not in a total eclipse then you're basically staring at the sun on a normal day like a window licker and probably deserve to go blind. Staring at the sun really hurts. If you do it long enough to go blind you weren't going to amount to much anyways.

Or, you can just look at the weird shadows on the ground, which I think is cooler than seeing a partial eclipse.

Looking at the shadows through a noodle colander is pretty cool
Fingers crossed for enough clear sky in the path in Texas but it's not looking too hot. At least I don't have to go anywhere or spend any money to see it so it's not the end of the world.

I don’t disagree. That wouldn’t stop a parent from suing if the kid did do just that (and I definitely know some kids who would).
The larger issue is instead of standing up to these idiots in court, districts assume it’s cheaper to settle out of court. They don’t want the “bad” publicity of fighting a parent in court.

or just send a form home saying that if your child wants to look at it, they can with glasses, but the school isn't responsible if they remove the glasses.
if the parent won't sign, then you can just stay inside.
but that would be common sense.

0.879 Magnitude in Birmingham. You will notice.

Here is a crazy idea. Here me out, but what about asking the school? Crazy, I know.

You'll notice a marginal haze. Otherwise, a perfectly normal day. It's not going to be 88% darker.

Similar situation here at my kids private school. Only part of the school will view the eclipse. The remainder will be inside all afternoon, for the "safety" of the students. It's the dumbest shite I've read, but totally not surprised.
So on an afternoon when 80% of the sun will be covered, my kids (pk-3 & 3rd) can't go outside because they might take some glasses off and stare directly at the sun, but on the following day when its 100% bright sunshine, they can go outside because apparently only then do they know to not look at the sun? WTF?!
Meanwhile our public school district, where my wife teaches, provided glasses for every public school student to view the eclipse. I guess those public school kids are presumed to be smarter than the ones at my kids school? They must know to not look at the sun without glasses.

Ok, so we agree.
Your first statement was that you won't notice.

Since you wanna be that way let’s put it this way… you won’t see shite that matters.
