re: EBRP School Board Held A Meeting Tonight To Discuss Changing Lee High's Name

The EBRSS is in total shambles, yet it debates a $250,000 name change. Meanwhile it is the folks in the southern part of the parish who are "racist" and "taliban" for suggesting a new city - all based on the fact that it could not form its own school district.
Unless real change happens, Baton Rouge will be the next Jackson MS very very soon.

Better question. How long until it becomes "Donald J. Trump High School"?
That's pretty stupid. Here's your sign!

1. You're a fricking idiot. 2. Lee High's way of teaching has changed to where it's going to be a magnet school in a way. 3. Check yourself before you wreck yourself. 4. You voted for Obama
Okay keyboard warrior.

You're pretty stupid. Must be hard going through life not being able to understand sarcasm?

The foolish waste of our taxes continues. Man, we love us some meetings, more chances for open mike night. As an alum, I'm offended more personally than I would be at this much ado about nothing, but I'm sure that changing the name will have the same profound effect on the behaviors of the disenfranchised and vulernables (are these the PC terms du jour?) as Mitch taking down those crime causing statues.
Why not call it John Parker High? He's the drunken SOB that almost single handedly permanently ruined the EBR Parish school system.
Latest cost estimates are that fixing this latest icon of privilege will hit taxpayers more like $350-400K. Very good use of a budget already stretched thin.

I bet no one cares about the 100s of alumni that attended Lee High School and cherish that name and their school. They don't count.
Apparently, high schools are now asking alums for donations. How does it work when Newname High asks grads from Lee for money?
Do they just say "Who is this? I didn't even go there."

how offended they were and they won't send their kids there
Please oh please follow through on this. I'd love to know where it is they'd send them to. They'd actually come out of pocket to follow through on this??

what about the fact the school is on Lee Dr.? Better change the street name also

Yep...it can become an infinite issue if we let it. Look changing a name doesn't erase history. My families genealogy includes owning a plantation which ultimately meant slaves. I'm not a slave owner, and this was a LONG time ago. Things were different. Changing a school name, removing a statue...that doesn't change history. If we don't learn from history we are doomed to repeat it...hiding it doesn't help that.

it is already becoming that...there will always be a "cause"...without one they will have to accept they have it pretty damn good.

The school board needs to use this simple rule. If it has nothing to do with educating the mandatory day care kids it should not be discussed at the school board meetings.

Lee High alum already had a good-bye ceremony a few years ago when BR high moved in and they knew it would be no more after that.
They've already come to terms that it will no longer be their high school.

I was having a conversation over the weekend with a friend who was visiting from BR, who graduated from Lee.
This, among other issues in BR was brought up, and I mentioned that every time I go back to BR/LSU, I just shake my head. Whether it is the traffic/roads, interactions in the groceries, crime reporting of The Advocate/Times, or the school system, I cannot fathom why anybody who has anything would stay in BR. Or LA for that matter.
There are parts of the country where you are safe from crime, have legit infrastructure, good PUBLIC schools, and everything else you would want to raise your family around. Why stay? I know I've still got all my family in LA (Tangi Parish), but other than blurred memories at LSU games and them, I have absolutely no desire to ever step foot in the state again.

My suggestions for a name change.
Barkevious High
or
K'Lavon High
or
George Eames High

Not judging by the Lee High School Rebels Facebook page. It seems like it had more comments and activity in the last week than in the entire last year.
EBR Schools had this on their FB page:
quote:
If you are unable to attend the 6 p.m. Lee High School Naming Community Forum, but would still like to comment on the issue you may do so using the following form at this LINK
BTW, one of the comments on an article this week about the renaming suggested alternative names, including "Mary Lee Donuts High School". If any graduates remember the Friday morning fundraiser where they sold Mary Lee Donuts, you might feel this was appropriate.
