This is just a flat out lie. Librarians make okay money at best and are always understaffed.

Budget priorities change. It’s admirable the people of EBRP supported libraries as long as they have but it’s days of being ultra-funded need to end. There are far more pressing issues.

Does the Council on Aging have a surplus too? He should look into that also.

Who the frick needs huge libraries anymore?

At one time you needed good large and many libraries. Today with the entirety of human knowledge in the palm of your hand you don’t.

You wouldnt even be able to guess how many people 1 library employs. After you saw that number you would then ask yourself what the f can they do all day here.

Last week, the mayor pitched moving money currently dedicated to Baton Rouge's library system to fund raises for BRPD officers.

I'm saying this as someone that supports lowering the library tax.

The library is not approaching this correctly. They need to come out and say why should their funds be taken (which are/were funded by the entire parish) and then given to the city of Baton Rouge Police? This is exactly what was happening with St. George. They were taking money from St. George and using it to fund stuff that was only for the city limits of Baton Rouge.

Not if the people keep voting to renew the tax - which they just did.

So you think the government should go against the wishes of the people because the government knows what's best for them?

I'm not sure I agree with you there.

I have literally have seen multiple sets of books in the state.

Let them fleece you if you want. Maybe Baton Rouge is the one area that the library's are properly staffed but given yalls history and who runs the show I figured staffing etc would be fricked up.

Correct, time to defund and start consolidating unused buildings then redirect the budget to areas of NEED

I would rather them redirect money from more overtly corrupt organizations before the Library system.

CATS, CoA, and BREC.

Seems like government agencies, if running efficiently, should never have an overwhelming surplus. They should be as close to breakeven as possible while adequately fulfilling their stated goals.

Not unless you are hiding funds for a rainy day man.

Libraries are notorious for this.

What you arent thinking about is after 7 years these folks all qualifiy for a pension.
wrong - when I worked for the ‘berry it was 10 years and we were paying 9.5% into it ourselves

Louisiana has some of the lowest paid librarians (a ‘real’ librarian has a masters degree).

I do think the library has too much money and for years the city/parish government has been salivating at the thought of lining their pockets with it.

But should police overtime be counted towards their retirement?? I’m not anti police but that department needs an overhaul, too.

none of the other departments in city/parish have that privilege

Hell, we couldn’t even earn overtime -just comp time.

Library employees weren’t allowed raises with LIBRARY MONEY bc it’s not fair not to give all the city/parish employees raises. I get police have a terrible job and maybe they should have better perks, but that’s not the library’s fault

So you think the police (or anyone for that matter) should have to pay a percentage of their OT into the retirement system, but not get anything back on that portion?
