i used to think this way too, but there are some drugs that just cannot truly be regulated because of the severe risk of overdosage... heroin is one of them...
Yeah, I don't know if drugs like heroin could realistically be legalized to where they're sold in a store like alcohol. Certainly fentanyl is too strong for that. But maybe decriminalization and set up safe places where junkies can do their thing.

I think you have seen too many movies. I've given Narcan many times, and this usually doesn't happen, especially through the intramuscular or intranasal route.
It is a safe enough to be OTC, but the bible thumpers in the legislature would be the biggest obstacle. But even is that wasn't the case, it would be cost prohibitive to many as it is a fairly expensive drug that many addicts probably couldn't afford.

Tipping point was Vicodin being triplicate.
This turned everything on its head. It becomes oxy expensive and oxy goes higher. It leaves heroin as a cheaper and easier alternative.
ER community knew this was coming when the change was made. Pound of prevention for an ounce of cure. And you get this byproduct.

Not really. This is one thing Big Pharm was no longer responsible for. Vicodin was dirt cheap at any pharmacy. Then turned around and sold for high profit. I don't know what a Percocet prescription costs. Big Pharm is evil but they weren't making a killing on Vicodin at under 5-10 bucks for 30 or more.

Heroin really is far worse than mj and coke. The deaths that result from OD is stageringly high. Dealers should be held acctable.

There's a spectrum between throwing people in prison for life and selling it to at the Circle K. Somewhere on that spectrum is the solution. Portugal has done it, and it hasn't resulted in thousands ODing in the streets.
You can recognize that what we're doing now isn't working while at the same time recognizing that users of this stuff are self destructive dumbasses. A certain percentage of the population is always going to insist on marching over a cliff. Our goal should be to save those who can be saved, while minimizing the collateral damage inflicted by those who can't.

cocaine is actually already legal, technically... it's a CII, rarely used nowadays, but it is a very effective topical anesthetic
It's great for stopping nosebleeds, too.

With access to LTs being more and more restricted, expect this number to continue to grow

Laughing at the comments blaming opiate painkillers for the heroin deaths. Most of these so-called victims are young white males with no history of pain or back surgery. Sure some may start off with OxyContin or such, but most often that is by choice and not a doctors prescription. No excuses for these victims .

Addiction is mental disorder. You can't blame people who choose to alter their brain chemistry, after all drugs are just out there somebody's got to use them.

Thank the government for creating massive restrictions on prescription drugs, which most don't OD on, and making heroin alot of these people's only choice.
Making drugs illegal doesn't get rid of drug addicts, but it does make getting help almost impossible.
Jail instead of rehabs, illegal drugs instead of prescriptions, etc...

I'll never understand how someone could stick that needle in there arm for the first time. Everyone has to know you're pretty much fricked after that..
Posted on 12/16/15 at 7:57 am to Das Jackal
few ever come back after that, it's a huge rush and instantly they chase that first time for the rest of their lives.
