Bus drivers used to work as lunch servers/cooks to become full time employees of the schools in some districts. I think that’s a pretty good combo and allows people to get paid more.
Not feasible. Cafeteria workers have to be there way too early to cook breakfast now. They did not serve breakfast back in the day

always completed before private schools on shared buses

This just depends on the routes of the driver and the start times of those schools.

If the private school starts at 7:30, the driver grabs those kids first and then drives the route for the public elementary school that starts at 8:30.

I heard they are offering one time $9500 bonus. What do they make hourly anyway? First Student drivers make $18-$24/hr. All part time workers.

I've never understood having a teacher with a master's degree outside doing recess duty or monitoring the cafeteria. Their skills would be better used helping kids with academic endeavors.

Way to save money

Also for mistaken reasons they want to limit adults in schools

It is a pretty big stipend (more than the teachers are getting), but their pay is literally the lowest in the state at $19k per year.

When the school board members mention in one breath that this will be a stipend in lieu of a salary increase so they can make the numbers work, then in the next breath say that the district is losing $60m next year in ESSER (CoVID) funds and will have to cut costs, it doesn't exactly inspire confidence that the pay will remain.

Cliff Lewis, a school board member from inner city BR, surprised me by calling for consolidation of schools and cutbacks on unneeded programs and initiatives so they can actually pay current employees and attract new ones. This needs to happen. Every year, EBR is opening a new school, while the old ones remain in poor condition due to lack of maintenance and are half empty because the population is dropping. They are opening a new visual and performing arts school next year in Broadmoor, when there already exists a dedicated magnet middle school and high school for VPA. Redundancy of services and personnel creates a poor product and an inefficient system.

At my school (not in EBR) our lunch servers/cooks are employed by a private company not related to the bus system (First Student) - the lunch servers/cooks also work the breakfast shift.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question b/c I’m not up to speed, but did they resolve this issue yet? Or are busses not running again on Monday?

I'm a teacher, and they haven't told us a damn thing. I heard from a principal friend that they are looking at some combination of late arrival and early release. I'm sure we will know by 10 p.m. on Sunday.

If it’s like here in Lafayette, no one rides the bus anymore.. carpool lines are miles long. Little Braxxton can’t take the heat.

More like: parents are fed up with their children having to ride to school with animals in an environment that is ripe for their abuse.

Edit: this ain’t the school system of 30 years ago.
