Aside from all of the good cop/bad cop stuff it is a stupid idea for the simple fact that it is a complete waste of money to pay sheriff's deputies to go around and "remind" people to lock their doors. Completely unnecessary.

But what about all the bitching about cops collecting revenue and never preventing crimes and just showing up to take a report?
Well, here you go. Cops on foot out in the streets not only foot patrolling areas where vehicles are being burglarized but also doing some community awareness to help people not become victims. Some may say that this is 'real' police work. take the cops from the revenue generating check points, out of the air conditioned patrol cars and put them ground level, mingling with the public and hopefully preventing some crime.

It was my understanding that 'flyers' on cars were considered litter in EBR and therefore illegal.

Is this the same sheriff who is going to protect all of St George (an area larger than the city limits of BR) from the bad guys without any further assistance from the BRPD?? Sounds good to me....

Because cops obviously have never overstepped their bounds, nor is there an endemic problem with police forces adopting a militarized, "us versus them" attitude.
I have forgotten how bad EBR cops can be. This probably won't turn out very good there. Back in civilized society this works very well for us since most of the cops are well compensated and the riffraff tends to end up elsewhere.

I think they should do 'CATS' safety searches of this who ride public transportation. May be more productive.

I feel you, but what happens when a cop essentially illegally opens a car door and "notices the smell of marijuana" or something of the sort?
Forgive me if the whole opening of the doors thing has been covered already.

If you believe they are doing this to help us make our cars safer, you're an idiot.

Maybe I'm missing part of the article, but does it say they are going to be opening doors?

what happens if a bike cop rides past your parked car and smells pot?
of course i will ignore the "illegally opens door" part because you are making that up.

Should get really interesting when they discover some drugs or body parts, etc., and then somebody notes that they tend to inspect more crappy vehicles in crappy neighborhoods than nice vehicles in upscale neighborhoods.

6 pages, and everyone assumes the cops are opening the doors? Hell, there's even allegations that the cops will be stealing on the first page.
You know, you can tell if a door is locked, window cracked, or valuables in plain sight just from standing outside and looking through the window.

Dearest Festus,
Do you remember when seatbelt laws came out? How they were for our own good and not a primary offense?
