A magnitude 8 earthquake has struck Northern Peru

There were no immediate reports of casualties or of major damage. Earthquakes that are close to the surface generally cause more destruction.

Earthquakes caused the distinctive topography of Peru millions of years ago and its still pushing the ground up. I will take a hurricane before an earthquake anyday.

8.0 is pretty significant, isn’t it?

Haha, uh yea it is, especially when it is shallow as it crumbled the crust like pie crust as the depths can't absorb the kinetic energy.

At least that is How I read it on another site.

About ten times the power of a 7.0.

The latter is way more destructive.

I just saw the headline and map image on Yahoo and got excited...then I read it was Peru and not California. Damnit! So close yet too far! Still waiting for CA to fall into Pacific as predicted by those scientists, in a consensus, so many years ago.

Remember the San Fran earth quake during the World Series? That was a 6.9 and look at the damage it caused. So yea 8.0 is pretty significant.

Magnitude is different than intensity.

Many factors play into destruction.

The same earthquake can produce different results in the same place.

It's like one comes with several days advance notice and the other just comes. I've ridden out several low 3.x-4.x quakes, ain't shite compared to a cat 2 storm. Obviously as you adjust numbers, earthquakes get scary af, quickly.

Hurricanes are much more deadly, but in this day and at least we get some warning of them.

If I HAD to stay in your normal everyday home for a cat 5 storm or magnitude 9 quake, I take the quake everyday.

Volcanoes on the other hand are by far the worst. They have caused mass extinctions in the past and can affect climate patterns for years.

It's actually a lot more powerful than 10 times a 7.0.
