Serious ignorant law question here: can the police check a found laptop like that? Or would they need a warrant to investigate the laptop for criminal activity?

I doubt they expected to find anything illegal. They most likely accessed the laptop to see if there was any contact information for the owner.

Some how these people connect thru a network. Many years ago I had a boss who’s brother was busted for child porn on a home computer. Guy had a wife and 3 kids. LE told my boss 1 guy sent a thumb drive to 30 people. Many of the 30 sent to several people. On and on.

It says it right in the article. He used to be the IT guy for one school district and then became the IT guy for another one.
He simply had access to all of the kids emails and he downloaded all of the nude pics teens sent to each other via the school emails. He probably sought out the school IT jobs for that very reason.
