What's the break even point as far as the amount someone needs to bring in to offset the added direct costs? And as far as costs, how do you determine direct AND indirect costs? (meaning: "because we both work we NEED a bigger house,TV, Prada purse, and yeti cooler")

Would your kids be better Home Schooled?

The answer to the last question is obviously "yes," as you well know....

We were doing some tax analysis last night, especially centered around that anti-middle class jump from 15 to 25% marginal rate. I would have to do some seriously creative financing to get us mostly in 15% rate even reducing work considerably and wife quitting job. But you still have to factor that 10% in diminished return.

The indirect costs are very real. You deserve that more expensive hotel room or wine because you've both been working so hard. You compensate for the lack of meaning by buying shite no one needs.

The direct costs are obvious. But I work from home so I could off-set a lot if we had kids. But then I'm bearing those costs. Too old for that--it's gonna take a team of that happens at this juncture.

I also have never understood the concept of procreating and then letting someone else rear your kids the majority of meaningful waking hours. So that's a cost you can't really monetize if you share those values.

Koheleth say, "What do people gain from all their labors at which they toil under the sun?"

Eta: yay TD downvotes from double anonymous ftards! Wheeeee.

Is she actually a good photographer? Or did she just buy a camera and think after a few months of taking pictures she could make money off of it?

Cause I've seen some stay at home mom/"photographers" pop up on my fb wall the past few years. Some are actually really good and are still doing sessions, others have moved on to selling Rodan and Fields or whatever other stuff they want to annoy all of their friends and family with.

She had been doing it on the side for a few years and had built up a small client base, so it seemed like the natural thing to do. I look at it more as a hobby for her, but if she could grow it over a few years to where it brings in more than a little spending money, that would be great. Plus, the losses on our taxes are great.

She's been doing it on the side for about six years or so. We also converted a room in our place into a studio about a year or so ago, so she's kind of legit. Forming the "business" was actually very helpful as far as taxes, etc., and like I already mentioned, she does already have a small client base.

I don't even want to think about that

If I weren't married I'd probably spend it all and be broke anyway

That's cool. Good luck to her

You do know what I mean though right?

A former nurse coworker of mine from my first nursing job in LA is now a stay at home mom of 4. She is now a family photographer and looking at her work...she's pretty talented I will say.

No intelligent person with kids actually let's this happen. If you can't have a meaningful and productive relationship with your children outside of the 8 hours they're in daycare/school, that extra time wouldn't do you a damn bit of good.

Thanks. Oh yeah, of course. We're lucky in that we aren't relying on it becoming a significant income source. I love the flexibility of her being home, and this is something that she likes to do in addition to household/kid care things that she has to do. Plus, having it as a working business means she really does have to spend time on "work" things like keeping track of expenses, advertising, training, income, etc.

what % of the population makes over 50k?

But since 100% of TD posters and their spouses seem to, well Yetis and Pradas for everyone!!

Your generalizations are weak

Try to get better at this please

Sucks to be you. I'm drinking my iced mocha vanilla latte out of a Yeti tumbler right now.

Wife and I each make more than that. I've thought about buying a Yeti, but I can wait for a bit. Being disciplined with spending ain't hard.

Is it really a stretch to assume the vast majority of married couples with at least one spouse that posts on TD gross over 50k?
